Anybody know a young/youngish Hugh?

So most of the names I'm considering for DS are "classic" style but Top 50 popular so I'm less worried about any teasing or him disliking his name - but Hugh is one of the only classic/traditional names I like that seems unpopular currently (Hugo is too trendy now for me).

Does anybody have/know a young Hugh? Do you know if he likes his name? Does he get teased with "Huge"? Thanks for any help.

I know one that is early twenties and one that is in his young teens. Both suit their name.

I haven't heard of anyone one making 'huge' jokes. I don't think that that is a factor to worry about.

Huw is the Welsh version. I've taught many Huws over the years. It was on my list for DS2.

Oldandcold · 22/09/2021 21:45

I know a huey. He's 13

ChrissyPlummer · 22/09/2021 21:48

I know of a Hugh who is a similar age to me (early 40s) and an old friend called her son Huey.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/09/2021 21:48

Thanks very much for the reassurance!

I know any teasing with names is less likely these days but if he follows other men in the family DS could potentially be up to 6"3/6"4 and likely medium build so I wanted to check - I've never met a young Hugh myself, I only know older ones.

I know a 10yr old Huw (Wales) and a 30yr old Hugh

foxgoosefinch · 22/09/2021 21:51

I know a Hugh aged about 8 and two Hugos slightly younger than that - about 5 and 6. They don’t seem to get teased or have their names shortened. I like it!

Tangoandcreditcards · 22/09/2021 21:52

There are 2 Hughs in my DCs school, one in Y1 and one in Y6. But that's unusual I think!

It's a great name.

Rrrob · 22/09/2021 21:53

Yes one. He’s 6 months.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/09/2021 21:55

Ah interesting that people know Huey's - part of the reason I liked Hugh was it seemed nn's were less likely with it being one syllable! Grin

The Huw thing is also a concern, as I currently live in Wales (but planned on using the Hugh spelling as myself and all my extended family are English/speak only basic Welsh)... but maybe he could be annoyed having to always spell his name?

It's one of the few names that I can honestly say in more than 15 years of teaching I've never come across. And I've taught in various demographics as well so it's not a 'class' (oh how I hate that) thing.
I think it's a perfectly sensible name tbh, it's older but not old-fashioned, to my ears.

This brought me up short because I realised that I don't know any young Hughs. However, I do know several young Hugos - I wonder why?

Curioushorse · 22/09/2021 22:04

If you live in Wales I'd go for the welsh spelling. It's my son's name, and is not uncommon (though not crazy common either). We're glad we went with the Welsh spelling because it doesn't have the 'weirdly posh' connotations i think the name has in England.

DemBonesDemBones · 22/09/2021 22:07

I know a 12 year old Hugh. I really like the name!

Alpacaface · 22/09/2021 22:11

I know an 11 year old Hugh, and he's such a fantastic kid. Brilliant name. This is in Scotland.

Really interesting you say that - part of the reason I'm considering it is that it seems well known yet fairly uncommon, but doesn't feel really dated to me as it's never been popular enough.

I don't know any young Hughs but it is one of my favourite boy's names and if I'd have a further DS it is the name I would have chosen

MorningNinja · 22/09/2021 22:13

What @Curioushorse says.

Huw and Hugh just feel completely different.

celestebellman · 22/09/2021 22:14

One around 9 at school - don’t think the name attracts comments or is seen as out there.
The spelling Huw looks much nicer though, I’d go for that if in Wales!

MsMarple · 22/09/2021 22:15

I know a 12 year old Hugh and he is kind, funny and interesting. Good choice I’d say.

Longdistance · 22/09/2021 22:16

There’s about 3/4 Hugh’s at the school I work in. Ranging from Year1 to Year8.

Tulips15 · 22/09/2021 22:17

i know a 6yr old Huw ( Welsh)

I like Huw too but I'm wary of using the Welsh spelling as none of us are Welsh heritage, so I'm worried it will seem odd if we ever move (we live on the border in an English speaking area - he'll likely be born in England as that hospital's closest). The "posh" thing doesn't bother me but him always having to spell it could be an issue ... I hoped to get away with it since Huw's not that popular/a top 100 name (unlike Harri/Harry, Tomos/Thomas, Jac/Jack etc which I knew could be problematic).

A 17 year old Hugh. Relatively late growth spurt, he's extremely tall now but still a string bean. Just the most fabulous human being, I adore him (not my ds but my next favourite child in the world).
