Anybody know a young/youngish Hugh?

So most of the names I'm considering for DS are "classic" style but Top 50 popular so I'm less worried about any teasing or him disliking his name - but Hugh is one of the only classic/traditional names I like that seems unpopular currently (Hugo is too trendy now for me).

Does anybody have/know a young Hugh? Do you know if he likes his name? Does he get teased with "Huge"? Thanks for any help.

I know two Hughs now in their late twenties/early thirties who I’ve known since childhood/teenagehood. Great name. Although not unnicknameable if you’re going for that - I’d always call a Hugh either Hughie or Shug/Shuggie.

I don't know of any, but wanted to add I love the Hugh spelling personally, go for it op 👍

There’s about 3/4 Hugh’s at the school I work in. Ranging from Year1 to Year8.

@Longdistance - Could you tell me whereabouts (roughly)? Is it a private school? (some seem to consider Hugh to have a "posh" image - I'm not sure as it seems fairly plain/simple to me).

Thanks for all you help btw everyone! Good to know there are younger Hugh's out there! Huey or Shug seem fairly neutral so wouldn't bother me if others called him that.

I know a 13 year old Hugh. He's just Hugh, doesn't have a nickname. I like it, it's a good solid name.

I wouldn't use Huw if you're not very Welsh as it is clearly a Welsh name. Isn't the pronunciation a bit different too? More 'Hoo' than Hyou'.

Shug? Where does that come from? I've never heard of that as relating to Hugh.

It was on our shortlist. DS is 26 though. He has a friend called Hugh - lovely chap.

I had contemporary called Hugh. He was 6'4". His nn from about 12 was "tiny". He's still called tiny at 62

Yes, I know a couple and As St Hugh of Lincoln s my favourite saint. That's what I would call a boy, should I ever have one.

My cousin has a 7 yr old Huw. Welsh heritage but lives in England.

My friend has a teenage Hugh. I like it.

Nephew on my husband’s side is 8 and called Hugh. Lovely name for a lovely boy. They live in Ireland.

Hugh might be called Shug in Scotland.

Interestingly, as Hugh is often considered posh, my hometown (where the two baby Hughs live) is quite a working class area and neither baby Hugh comes from a 'posh' family

Yes, it’s a prep school.

Hugh is a family name for us, used across the generations. I also know of a baby Hugh (family name for them as well, and also Irish heritage).

Famous British Hughs: Grant, Bonneville, Dancy, Laurie and Fearnley-Whittingstall all have posh credentials.
(Not British) Jackman and Hefner, not so much 🤣

I know a four year old Hugh. Hasn’t suffered any teasing. There are lots of young Hugos which sounds a bit OTT posh but Hugh is more classically posh - quite a strong, classic name.

Yeah the Shug thing is Scottish. I’ve no idea why!

I wouldn’t have thought of it as specifically posh, more class-neutral like John or something. Would fit in anywhere.

I think both Hugo & Hugh are nice - My preference would be Hugh & I can't see there is any teasing to be done.

I know 2, 18yo & 15yo. Don't know if they like it. Never heard nicknames. East of England.
