Anybody know a young/youngish Hugh?

So most of the names I'm considering for DS are "classic" style but Top 50 popular so I'm less worried about any teasing or him disliking his name - but Hugh is one of the only classic/traditional names I like that seems unpopular currently (Hugo is too trendy now for me).

Does anybody have/know a young Hugh? Do you know if he likes his name? Does he get teased with "Huge"? Thanks for any help.

My son, he's 13.

OneTitWonder · 23/09/2021 06:26

Sorry, posted to soon.

He's 13, as far as I know he likes his name. His nickname (from his mates) is Hooga - I have no idea why. Aas far as I know he's never been teased with "Huge".

Have never had a moment's regret with his name, still love it just as much 13 years later.

I know a 4 yr old one and a 27 year old one

@ChrissyPlummer

I know of a Hugh who is a similar age to me (early 40s) and an old friend called her son Huey.
I have never heard Huey before but I think it is now my top choice! Thank you

I know one, according to DM it's very hard to shout across the park etc to get his attention. Just comes out as an odd sound 😆.

I only know one Hugh, in his twenties. I know of one in his thirties.

It feels quite a posh name to me, albeit not as posh as Hugo. Which is a bit silly as I have quite a lot of Huws and Hughs in my family tree on the Welsh side and they were very working class!

Although some spelled their name as Hugh officially they would have used the Huw pronunciation. There was a period of using anglicised names officially in Wales and there's a lot of that in my family tree e.g. Jane/Sian, Laura/Lowri, Ellen/Elin, Mary/Mari, Thomas/Tomos etc. Makes researching your family tree a nightmare!

Yes, I think Hugh is more 'classic' than the formerly overtly posh Hugo - which has recently become widely fashionable, in the Arlo, Milo mould.

spiderlight · 23/09/2021 11:15

I know an 11-year-old Huw.

I have a nephew Hugh, never been an issue with his name. Have known a few young Hughs who have went by Q (might just be a Belfast thing though), Hughie and just Hugh.

LowlandLucky · 23/09/2021 16:46

Just counted and i know 4 but i do live in Southern Scotland. All together i know 11, 4 are from the same family

Thanks very much everyone for all your help Flowers. Good to know so many know younger Hugh's and that there is no teasing. I've decided the potential "posh" thing doesn't bother me - I feel Hugh is more along the lines of Henry than Tarquin (not too posh for a working class/lower middle class family like mine to use).

All the positive replies have made even more keen on it - I just have to decide whether to risk the potential spelling issue living here (Huw) and if I like it more than my more popular/Top 50 choices.

I’ve always thought the name sounds more like a sound than a name, like ‘phew’.. maybe because it has no constant sounding letters?

TankGirl97 · 23/09/2021 21:16

I know a 6yo Hugh. No teasing, but at preschool age a lot of the kids couldn't pronounce it. He was called Q or Few by his friends for a couple years! Lovely name though.

poodlepip · 23/09/2021 21:54

My brother and good friend names. When I asked what names to suggest for my baby they both said "Hugh is a good name" 🤣 so they clearly like it!

shouldistop · 24/09/2021 08:20

I know one in his 30s and his nickname is shug

DacwMamYnDwad · 24/09/2021 10:45

I really like Hugh and Huw.

Huw's natural nn would be Huwcyn
Hugh will be Hugo

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/09/2021 22:54

Thanks again everyone for all your help - Hugh is staying on my (very) short list Flowers

Great name

Lemonlemon88 · 25/09/2021 23:01

I think Hugh is a lovely name. Most of the Hugh's I know are in their 30s but I dont believe they ever got teased.

millzcrawf · 28/09/2021 12:34

My baby cousin is 3 and his name is Hughie and obviously gets Hugh for short. I honestly think it's such a sweet sounding name and not overly popular!
