Elio

Hello, I was wondering what people think of the name Elio. It’s Italian and Spanish in origin and means “sun”. Pronounced Eh-lee-oh. Would people assume this pronunciation or something else?

I really liked Leo for a boy since before I had my DD but it’s become massively popular in the last few years. I thought Elio had a similar feel but is obviously much less used.

I’m based in the UK but was also curious to hear from people with Italian/Spanish backgrounds about how this name is perceived in these countries, e.g is it dated? Any negative associations? Apparently it’s also recently become popular in France. Thanks everyone.

Can't really help but wanted to give it a big thumbs up.. I love it!

catchyjem · 22/09/2021 21:08

Hadn't heard of it before but I really like it. Not too different from Elliot really.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/09/2021 21:11

No Spanish/Italian background but I love the sound and meaning of Elio - it feels a lot easier to wear than the original Helios imo. Since "Call me by your name", I think many people in the UK would know how to pronounce it, but even if they haven't seen the film they might well guess right since it follows the same pattern as "Clio".

Billandben444 · 22/09/2021 21:12

I wouldn't have pronounced it like that so he might get fed up with having to correct other thickos people?

Greenandcabbagelooking · 22/09/2021 21:15

I really like it! It's not my usual taste in names at all, but I like it a lot. I would say it the way you have stated.

coffeeschmoffee · 22/09/2021 21:18

Call me by your name! Elio, Elio, Elio. What a movie, I cried so much. Beautiful name OP.

ISpyCobraKai · 22/09/2021 21:18

I named my car this, after the character in, "Call me by your name"!
Not sure about it for a child, people will assume its meant to be Elliot.

ISpyCobraKai · 22/09/2021 21:19

Elio, Elio, Elio, Elio, Elio.
Oliver, I remember everything.

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 22/09/2021 21:30

My cousin has an Elio. She's French speaking.

It's a great name 👍

Famousfrays · 22/09/2021 21:37

I love it. It reminds me of call me by your name, it was one of our options for our boys

PandoraP · 22/09/2021 21:39

Love it. My son is Mio which is a bit similar.

MadameMinimes · 22/09/2021 21:40

My first thought was call me by your name too.
It’s a lovely name.

Zeev · 22/09/2021 21:43

Love it.

ChrissyPlummer · 22/09/2021 21:46

I wouldn’t pronounce it like that. Do you/DH have an Italian/Spanish background? It just looks like Elliott but with some letters missing.

Kite22 · 22/09/2021 21:50

I've never seen / heard it, and that is how I "said" it in my head.

I quite like it

Katnissx · 22/09/2021 21:51

I would have pronounced it Eh-lie-oh, but I like it 👍

MsWalterMitty · 22/09/2021 21:57

There’sa mountain in Wales called Moel Eilio... said in the same way

MsWalterMitty · 22/09/2021 21:58

Or rather Ay-lee-o

tiredturnip · 22/09/2021 21:58

Never heard of it before but it's beautiful!

DotDotDotDotDot · 22/09/2021 21:58

Thanks everyone for your comments. I actually haven’t seen the movie call me by your name, it seems the association is quite strong. I’ll definitely watch it though, that might sway me one way or the other.

@frazzledfragglefromfragglerock That’s nice to hear, can I ask, does your cousin pronounce it as I said in my OP?

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/09/2021 22:07

Pretty sure the Spanish name is Helio, but the 'h' is silent.

DotDotDotDotDot · 22/09/2021 22:07

@ChrissyPlummer No we’re not Italian or Spanish in background.
