Expecting baby girl in November,

we are decided on names Emily and Matilda but not sure whether to do Emily Matilda or Matilda Emily - opinions?

I'd choose Matilda Emily as Matilda is, imo, a more interesting and stronger name. Nothing wrong with Emily, it's pretty, but more of a middle name.

Unmute · 22/09/2021 13:24

We go by middle names in my family and I prefer Matilda so I'd say Emily Matilda. It depends which one you actually want to call the baby, or are you completely undecided?

DuneFan · 22/09/2021 13:34

Emily Matilda flows better to my ear as you avoid the awkward meeting of vowels that occurs in "Matilda Emily".

But I think that the intended "known by" name is generally best first.

RiotAtTheRodeo · 22/09/2021 13:38

Matilda is a better name so I'd pick that as the first name. Middle names don't really feature in a person's everyday life so it wouldn't be a consideration to me as to which order sounded best. I'd just focus on which name I wanted to say aloud 30 times a day for the next 18 years Smile

Pemba · 22/09/2021 14:03

Emily is nicer, so I'd pick Emily Matilda. Flows much better than the other way around, too.

PeonyTime · 22/09/2021 14:13

Emily Matilda flows better.
I prefer Matilda......
Sorry, firmly on the fence here!

Please dont call her by her middle name. I'm known by my middle name, and it is often fine, but also causes issues with official documentation (think 4 months of massive deductions off my pay slip because payroll couldnt comprehend A.Peony Time needed to be recorded for tax office purposes, whilst Peony was sending the emails. It was nice when the tax office back dated all my tax tho). I've also had official documentation sent in the wrong name, and flights booked in the wrong name. Whatever you are going to call her, put it as the first name on the birth certificate, please.

Tal45 · 22/09/2021 14:22

I agree that Emily Matilda flows better, but I prefer Matilda too. Both are nice though so I would just put the name you like most, first.

PlainJane1000 · 22/09/2021 20:23

I think it's worth considering which sounds better with your surname because 99% of the time you are just known as first name - surname, not as first name - middle name.

BeKindBeYou · 22/09/2021 20:24

Emily Matilda sounds lovely!

manhattenrain · 22/09/2021 23:32

I think Emily has become less popular, whilst Matilda is rising in popularity. Now might be a great time to use Emily as a first name.

BOOMshakeshakeshaketheroom · 22/09/2021 23:51

EM, then her initials look like a shortening of her first name too!

BubbleCoffee · 23/09/2021 08:16

Emily Matilda

Noshowwithoutpunch · 23/09/2021 08:18

Agree with pps Emily Matilda flows better...
But I prefer Matilda.

I don't really understand the point in this?
Rrrob · 23/09/2021 09:08

Prefer Matilda but Emily Matilda flows better...

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/09/2021 14:05

Matilda is a much stronger name so I would go with that as a first name or choose something weaker as a middle name if you go with Emily.

Purplesparkle34 · 25/09/2021 14:31

I’d pick Matilda Emily. I love the name Matilda, and also the nickname Tilly. I think it’s a stronger name than Emily, so more suited as the first name.

Datsandcogs · 25/09/2021 14:36

I prefer Emily so would choose Emily Matilda. But it also depends on your surname initial and how either would flow with your surname.

WatchWait · 25/09/2021 14:40

It always has to be, what do you actually want to call her?
Once you've got over the announcement of her name when she's born, a middle name is more or less irrelevant.
Most middle names I know are either after a special person, or names that the parents love but wouldn't dare use every day, like Dudley or Jemima, say.
Otherwise they are pretty pointless really

Myfilterisbroken · 25/09/2021 14:41

Definitely Matildia Emily!

MadeOfStarStuff · 25/09/2021 15:07

Matilda is a much nicer name so I would say Matilda Emily even though the other way around probably flows better. Choose the name you like best for the first name, that’s far more important than the flow of the names together
