Old/ unusual Irish boys names

Wapawapa · 17/09/2021 19:10

We are Irish living in Ireland and considering an Irish name.
Not one of the "common" names like Cian, Sean, Liam, Cillian, Peadar, Micheal , Fiachra, Conn, Fionn, Oisin, Naoise etc

Not one of the ones that have become popular recently as family/ friends have got there first!
Eg Odhran, Rian, Tiernan, Tadhg

We are thus leaning towards an unusual/ old name that is not commonly used. I will get a book but as the weekend is coming up I'd love to have a few suggestions

(Excuse my lack of fadas!)

I like Enda, you don't hear it much now but I knew a lovely Enda, he'd be about 55 now. No babies called Enda. Bring it back.

Pallisers · 17/09/2021 23:35

I knew an Enda but his family pronounced it Inda which put me off.

@Rainallnight

Oh I love Cuan. Good shout *@powershowerforanhour*. It means ‘harbour’ so I think it’s a beautiful name for a man. There was an Irish radio presenter many years ago called Cuan Hanley but I don’t know anyone now called it.
It’s having a revival . I know 3 under 5 (Clare)
Rainallnight · 18/09/2021 00:06

Ah. Maybe not that uncommon any more

MrsFin · 18/09/2021 00:09

My favourite Irish boy name is Jarlath.

Susannahmoody · 18/09/2021 00:10

These are beautiful and very evocative

trappistkepler · 18/09/2021 02:32

Eochaidh
Ruadhán
Roibeard
Seanan
Aidan
Ferdia

Poor old Ferdia got a raw deal in mythology but he still died with honour (I think?). Luan means Monday in Irish, not sure how it got listed on name sites! Daithi is quite common and a bit old fella down the road who is annoying. Iarla is nice though.

Good site with all the fades and sound bites:

I suggested it - I have a relative of that name.

trappistkepler · 18/09/2021 03:01

@mathanxiety fair enough, some people are particular about name meanings, that's why I mentioned it. It is a nice sounding word mind you, just wish it meant more than Monday Smile.

mathanxiety · 18/09/2021 03:40

Neasán
Amhlaoibh
Fergus/ Fearghus
Oscar

Cearbhall
Mel

mathanxiety · 18/09/2021 03:42

I think it can also be spelled Lughan (I believe it's derived from the name of the pre-Christian god Lugh).

trappistkepler · 18/09/2021 04:01

Then might I also suggest:
Lughan

Cearbhall is quite a good name.

Elisemum · 18/09/2021 04:18

We’re also in Ireland but god I hate Irish names, I truly do, but in saying that we are having a baby Sean in 2 weeks and it’s the only name that I absolutely love and have been loving for years. Just be careful with a super unusual names.. my husband is Irish and didn’t hear half these names people here mentioned. We have a little girl in the family who has an unusual name (french name) and no one knows how to pronounce it despite the parents saying it numerous times. So everyone is just too embarrassed to ask again (me included )so they call her “baby” :) even singing a Happy birthday song for her was a bit akward, that’s why I’m not fan of unusual names

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 18/09/2021 06:55

I love Dónal. It seems a little out of fashion for some reason.

What a peculiar post. Thank you for your opinion, but perhaps you’re not best qualified to comment, with your ‘hatred’ of Irish names, and a husband who seems curiously unfamiliar with his own culture?
SeanChailleach · 18/09/2021 08:44

@steeple I think@elisemum makes a reasonable point. The OP did ask for old and unusual names, and some of these are very obscure. It's not surprising if many Irish people have never heard of them - that's kind of the point.
I absolutely love Irish names and I am glad people use them. I would love it if they would all learn to speak Irish as well and keep it alive on their tongues.

I think you’re overlooking the part where she says she ‘hates Irish names’, so is hardly qualified to comment — and as the OP specifically asked for old and unusual Irish names, surely it’s entirely irrelevant that @Elisemum’s husband hasn’t heard of some of them?

cloudacious · 18/09/2021 09:42

Steeple

You've come over all snooty. This is definitely the wrong place for you!

TBH, Elise's answer was the most Irish thing that's happened on this thread and if you can't cope with it you'd perish in Ireland!

SeanChailleach · 18/09/2021 10:03

@steeple I think it's appropriate to challenge and question the way Irish names are being used currently. The neurosis is all part of the heritage.

@OrangeAndYellowAndBlue

Yeh, I like Donal. Donal, Seamus, Enda, Padraig all unusual now and a bit more solid than the floaty sounding names that are more in fashion right now.
