Old/ unusual Irish boys names

We are Irish living in Ireland and considering an Irish name.
Not one of the "common" names like Cian, Sean, Liam, Cillian, Peadar, Micheal , Fiachra, Conn, Fionn, Oisin, Naoise etc

Not one of the ones that have become popular recently as family/ friends have got there first!
Eg Odhran, Rian, Tiernan, Tadhg

We are thus leaning towards an unusual/ old name that is not commonly used. I will get a book but as the weekend is coming up I'd love to have a few suggestions

(Excuse my lack of fadas!)

Thank you to everyone else too. A lot of the Mythological names I like but
Ferdia - killed by his best friend 😢
Setanta - a big name to live up to?

I also like Ruadhan but know about 3 already and I like Luan but would it always be associated with Monday?
@MrsScrubbithatescleaning great idea!

@LifesNotDoneYet we have one Tiernan in the family anyway. I think it's making a comeback

@generalh is that where the H comes from?!

@powershowerforanhour thank you I hadn't thought of videos . I love Cuan

@Deadringer Carl pronounced Kale (to rhyme with Gael?)
I might out myself but yes!

Pallisers · 17/09/2021 19:52

I love Nessan - especially if you have a Limerick connection
How about Garvan?
I know someone called Ceallachan (can't do fada on last a) nicknamed Cal.

I'd have love to have used Eoghan Roe

I'm not sure if it is still in print but Irish Names for Children by Patrick Woulfe is a great resource - it comments on which families/areas used the names, provides a list of old irish saint names by month/day and also provides the irish "equivalent" of common english names.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/09/2021 19:53

It's more like T(w)ine-an

Hungry675tf · 17/09/2021 19:57

Daire
Senan
Tyrone

It feels like every hear people find the next big Irish name, and then loads of them pop up at once. I'm not even in Ireland and I know 3 Daire's, 2 Tadgh's and not a single Harry or Oliver

emptycoffeecup · 17/09/2021 19:57

I came on to say Odhran but you've ruled it out.

StandsForComfort · 17/09/2021 20:09

Malachy

StandsForComfort · 17/09/2021 20:12

Lughaidh

True. And not only killed by his best pal but killed by his best pal shoving a spear up his bum, if I remember correctly!

Poor auld Ferdia.

Toastytoads · 17/09/2021 20:17

Immaback · 17/09/2021 20:23

I love Cuan and Ruan , but we were living in the U.K. so decided against both of those. Still love them though. Aodh?
I didn’t know Tiernan was popular either !

Mumatoo · 17/09/2021 20:30

Conn,
Aodan,
Donagh
Iarla (Iarlaith)

Mumatoo · 17/09/2021 20:31

I meant Aodh but my phone autocorrected to Aodan which was on my boy’s name list

LifesNotDoneYet · 17/09/2021 20:32

I did like Ferdia as well but yikes what an ending...

We have Cormac on the list too, there's one in DDs nursery and we know another in London so it's obviously well used here in the UK. It is rather nice though.

wannabebetter · 17/09/2021 20:36

What about Conghaille (pronounced Connolly)? Family member called her son this & I think it's gorgeous!!

DFOD · 17/09/2021 20:39

Jarlath - or what about all those old 1920 catholic names - Cornelius, Jeremiah, etc

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 17/09/2021 20:58

Macdara is a bit different; an old saint's name.

Wapawapa · 17/09/2021 20:58

Daithi, Ferdia, Cuan, Aodh, Luan, Lughaigh, Iarla, Ruadhan
Are my faves so far

(We're not into 1920s Catholic names but that's a whole collection there!)

About 80% of these are in my son's preschool class.

FrDamo · 17/09/2021 21:14

I'll second: Aodh, Malachy, Eunan and Garbhan

I'll throw in: Columba, Fintan, Ailbe, Naoise, Oisín,Ultán
