Thoughts on Madeleine please? Is this how you'd spell it? How would you pronounce it? Do you know any? Thanks.

Yes this is how I would always spell it - the French way.
Pronounced Mad-el-enn

I know adults with the name but no children at the moment.

toastofthetown · 13/09/2021 19:38

I like Madeleine. Madeleine is my preferred spelling.Worth bearing in mind that she might want to be Maddy, so if you hate the nickname I'd avoid it.

Madeleine is sitting just inside the top 300. It peaked in popularity in 2005, dropped in 2008 (assume due to Madeleine McCann) and has been slowly dropping in popularity for the last ten years. So if popularity is a concern, while you might have another Madeleine at your child's school or meet the occasional Madeleine, she's not likely to meet someone with her name everywhere she goes.

nearlynermal · 13/09/2021 19:42

I think it's very pretty. She'll be Maddy as an abbreviation, I guess.

Ninasister · 13/09/2021 19:48

Lovely

nc86952 · 13/09/2021 19:48

It is a nice name. I think another abbreviation is Lainey?
Surely better than Maddy.

adeleh · 13/09/2021 19:49

Gorgeous.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/09/2021 23:15

Beautiful and underused now - don't know any young ones. Spell it the traditional/original way -Madeleine and pronounced "Mah -deh - lehn" (as close to the French as I can describe!).

KingofQueens · 13/09/2021 23:19

I would spell it that way, yes. And whilst if I used it I would want people to pronounce it the French way - I think I would have resign myself to the fact that most people would use the English way Mad-i-lynn .

Auroreforet · 13/09/2021 23:20

I know an adult Madeleine, beautiful name.

Enough4me · 13/09/2021 23:26

Yes I agree with the spelling, my cousin's name and we say Ma-deh-lin. I remember when she learnt to write her name we focused on highlighting the three 'e's and the ele in particular, which made it easier for her to remember.
She's a Maddie now.

Enough4me · 13/09/2021 23:27

As in she prefers Maddie now she's an adult.

LouLion · 14/09/2021 11:50

Thanks for your comments so far.

@IamnotwhouthinkIam - yes, I prefer Mah -deh - lehn as a pronunciation, though I imagine she'd get Mah - duh - lyn quite a bit. Really dislike Mah - duh - line (rhyming with 'sign' 'fine' etc.)

I like the French pronunciation of Madeleine. Ma de Layn.

I don't like the English shortening of Maddie- it skyline someone mad!

Blubells · 15/09/2021 12:50

Sorry not skyline but sounds like Blush

Elisemum · 16/09/2021 18:02

I really like the name but unfortunately there is Madeleine McCann and it would put me off, I can’t explain why… it would always remind me of her story, so I wouldn’t use it. But it’s a very nice name indeed

2lsinllama · 16/09/2021 18:09

I taught several Madeleines over the years. Most were Maddy but the one who really sticks out was Leiney - she was a throughly lovely girl. If my Matthew had had a sister we would have probably picked it.

Unwatchthisthread · 16/09/2021 18:16

Beautiful name and I think the association with Madeleine McConnell has started to fade.

Purplestripeysock · 16/09/2021 18:26

We have one in our family. It's lovely. She calls herself Maddy. I have never heard the nickname Leiney. Not personally keen!

LindyLou2020 · 16/09/2021 18:28

@LouLion
I ADORE that name. Go for it!
It's classy without being "posh", not "wacky" but relatively uncommon, and just so, well, attractive.
When I had my daughter it was a toss-up between her name and Madeleine.
Her name narrowly won, but my next daughter was going to be a Madeleine, but unfortunately I didn't manage to have another one.
But I still love that name.

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 16/09/2021 18:36

Beautiful name and I think the association with Madeleine McConnell has started to fade.

A little maybe but both teen DC are very much aware of her and DC2 follows the case and sometimes talks about it, so the association is not forgotten quite yet.

Unfashionable · 16/09/2021 18:43

Madeleine is a lovely name, but it’s almost inevitable that it will be shortened to Maddie, so bear that in mind.

MummyPigRules · 16/09/2021 18:46

I have a Madeleine! She goes by Maddie at school and I call her Madda at home. Still my favourite girl’s name!

Coffeeonmytoffee · 16/09/2021 18:48

I love the name. The spelling is wonderful.
I love names which can be shortened.

LittleGwyneth · 17/09/2021 11:43

I guess it depends whether you prefer mad-uh-line or mad-ahh-laine. Both lovely I think.
