We’re expecting a boy so my lists of girl names left over from DD have gone out the window. Any thoughts on the following, and any additional ideas?

I love:
Arthur (not in UK so popularity isn’t an issue)
Magnus
Gustav
Alaric (hormones?)
Wolfram
Otto (tricky as used by a close relative)

DH loves:
Knut (FFS)
Lars
Mads
Anders
(I don’t like any of them…)

Ideas? Please?

BIL wanted to call DNephew Knut spelt with a C. Changed his mind when he figured people who heard the name would write Newt. How about Lochlann or Olaf?

TheVanguardSix · 11/09/2021 07:53

Nils
Jan/Yann
Ansel or Anselm (I prefer Ansel)
Roland
Timo
Albin
Anton
Ulrich
Loic (Breton name as opposed to Northern European)
Joachim (Yoakim)- which is a biblical name but used in Europe DD11's best friend is a Dutch boy named Joachim, for example.

Knut... it's just a swift nooo, isn't it? Grin

Zarene · 11/09/2021 08:04

I love Torben and Bror.

davidrosejumper · 11/09/2021 08:17

I like Magnus and Anders from your original selection. Knut would be a hard no from me as well for obvious reasons, and gave me a good giggle.

Scandinavian menfolk I know are called:

Nils
Thomas
Konstantin
Sven
Erik
Viktor
Trond ('Tron')
Björn
Jore (Yoh-ruh)

Alaric is lovely as is Lars. Eric maybe?

Agree that from a UK perspective Cnut is not workable Grin . Canute? (Not much better maybe!)

Jakob/Jacob, with the Yakob pronunciation?

Magnus makes me think of the TV presenter. Guess I'm showing my age there.

How about
Marten (has an access above the a, so pronounced Mohrten)
Severin
Julius

We have Swedish and Norwegian family and like all of these

Arlo

Hans
As pp have said though, what’s your Scandi connection?

Snoken · 11/09/2021 09:02

I'm Swedish and a lot of the name on here are quite surprising to hear anyone suggest. Gunnar, Stellan, Leif for example are all men in their 70's now. Names that are not cool and retro yet, just old. A bit like naming your child Craig or Gary today in the UK.

Names I do like are:

Viggo
Odin
Albin
August

I'd be careful with names such as Magnus or Knut as they tend to not be pronounced correctly by English speaking people. Magnus should be Mang-nus, not Mag-nus and Knut should be pronounced with the K and the nut sounds like nout (rhymes with fluit).

IVflytrap · 11/09/2021 09:05

I like Magnus, Arthur and Alaric (in that order).

Rollo
Stellan
Soren

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 11/09/2021 09:17
