How to pick a baby name

Hi! We are torn between two baby boy names, my husband loves one and I love the other.. how do you decide? One is very unusual and one is very popular.. is it better to be unique or trending?!!!

I’d usually say unique but we ended up going for the more popular baby boy name purely because it was the name we loved most. I’d forget about popularity and just base it on which you like most. Obviously that’s not easy if you both like different names though 🙈

Thank you, that’s good advice! My husband says the same thing, he likes the more unique name, but I’m worried about signing our DS up for a lifetime of repeating and spelling his name… 😬😬😬

The more popular name is Luca, however with the new Disney movie.. is that going to mean a whole class full of Lucas or would no one else want to name their child after a sea monster?!!!!

I would say it depends if unique is totally weird or just a bit different! We had the same choice for DD and went for unique. Never regretted it but having seen some of the "unique" names on here I would be wary!

Is it really unique or just known but unusual?

One of my children has a known but unusual name, it's fine and it's never mispelt.

Elisemum · 10/09/2021 16:59

Either/or. Unique is fine as long as he doesn’t have to spend his lifetime spelling it or explaining how to pronounce it. Nothing worse than that!

The name you love! I have a couple of friends who went, what they thought was, the unique route....turns out, they'd picked the "up and coming" trendy names, which were unheard of a few years ago but are now everywhere at baby groups and pre school! One friend's son has just started reception with a child who has not only the same first name (which friend has always said is so unusual) but the same surname too. So definitely go for what you love because you can't guarantee anything.

There are a million Lucas everywhere at the moment, I swear every baby boy is called it.

Pick the other one.

TatianaBis · 10/09/2021 17:57

What's the unusual one - as long as it's not yoonique I'm in favour.

Elisemum · 10/09/2021 19:35

People’s opinions are very subjective. I love Luca/Lucas and I don’t know any! My toddler is in creche and I see all the babies names and not one Luca so to me it’s still quite unique. It all depends where u are so pick a name that you love more

I always say that the woman should have final say as they are the one doing all the work getting the baby here!
Luca is a nice name - I have v young children and haven’t heard it at baby groups at all. When choosing names I always go with the ‘which would I prefer to be called?’ As the final test!
