Help! I don’t like any boys names.

Due in 5 weeks, don’t know the sex. We’re set on a girls name, but all the boys names we had shortlisted now I just feel a bit lukewarm about. I’ve spent days trawling through baby name lists and can’t find anything that really resonates.
Please give me some inspiration with your favourite boys names, particularly any less well known ones would be good.
Would consider African names as well as western names.

@mishmased
What type of African names and ideally what country? East, West North, south? You need to narrow down what sort of African names you like.

Ideally Nigerian/West African but doesn’t necessarily have to be. Nigerian Aunty yesterday suggested Amari which we both really like so that’s definitely on the shortlist. I also really like Femi but DH not convinced.

How about Leo / Leon rather than Theo?

I also love Leo but it’s the name of my cousins child. This is the problem I think, between DH and I we have over 40 cousins, many with multiple children, plus lots of friends with small children, so it feels like all of the good names have already been taken.

I used to work with two men from Nigeria, they were called Emmanuel and Chijioke.

My son's name is Thomas so of course I have to suggest that Grin

StarshipsAreMeantToFly · 05/09/2021 08:42

Amari is lovely.

mishmased · 05/09/2021 17:15

@WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy that narrows it down 😂 I'm assuming Yoruba names so here's a few:
Oluwafemi (God loves me)- nn Femi
Ayodeji (my joy is doubled)- nn Ayo, Deji
Oladeji (wealth is doubled)- nn Ola, Deji
Olakunle-Kunle
Olamide-Lamide
Babatunde-Tunde
Babawale -Wale
Olawale
Olawole-Wole
Oluwaseyi-Seyi
Oluwasimi-Simi
Omobolanle- nn Bola, Bolanle, Ola
Abiola
Abiodun
Ademola-demola
Olashina-Shina
Kolawole-Kola

I saw someone mentioned Chijioke, if you're not Nigerian that is an Ibo name. Talk to Nigerian Aunty 😆

mishmased · 05/09/2021 17:16

Btw Amari is lovely as well.

Miles...I love that it is an anagram of smile.

Jeremy, I love this a lot.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 05/09/2021 17:59

@mishmased, thanks so much, that’s massively helpful!
DH family is actually Ibo but we definitely seem to like more Yoruba names. I don’t think they would mind, they’ll just be delighted if we go for a Nigerian name.

@mishmased I hope so! If not I’ll blame DH 😂

We were talking about names the other day with MIL and I said how much I like Amari and Femi which (I think!) are Yoruba and she was saying how much she liked them too, so I figure that was her chance to object.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, so many names on here that I hadn’t even considered before so this is really useful.

@WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy make sure to check with your Dh because unless you are Yoruba (and apologies if you are) it will be unusual to give your half Ibo child a Yoruba name. It is like the unwritten and unspoken naming conventions in Nigeria 😂
more Ibo names below 🤣
Chinonso nn Nonso
