Would you consider this a name by itself or do you only see it as a nickname for girls names starting with "Alex"?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Seanchailleach · 03/09/2021 15:41

If a child said their name was Lexi I would expect it was short for something, but I try not to make assumptions. I fear i would call her Alex by mistake though - I used to work with so many kids their names all whirled and swirled in my head so I did mix them up a bit.

Marguerite2000 · 03/09/2021 15:47

Yes I would consider it a name in itself.
2 out 3 of my kids have what is considered shortened versions, those are the names we liked, not the longer versions.

Urghhhhh · 03/09/2021 16:09

Sounds a bit like a stripper name yo me. And more of a nickname, not a name in itself.

toastofthetown · 03/09/2021 16:32

I’d expect a Lexi was a nickname, but wouldn’t be surprised if it were a full name either. Lexi hit its peak of popularity about ten years ago as a full name. I’m not sure if Lexi has fallen out of favour in general or if people are preferring a longer form for it.

Tibtab · 03/09/2021 16:34

I would assume they were an Alexis or Alexandra and that Lexi was a shortened version.
I had a friend called Katie and everyone seemed to assume she was a Katherine but she wasn’t.

Cbeebiesrehab · 03/09/2021 16:56

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lexi as a stand alone name.

RichPetunia · 03/09/2021 17:06

Lexi isn’t a great name, it would make me think you’d been watching Eastenders. Alexandra’s nice.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 03/09/2021 17:10

I really like it, would have it on my list but there is already a Lexi in the family. I would assume it’s short for Alexis but by itself is fine too IMO.

MorriseysGladioli · 03/09/2021 17:12

I think it's lovely, and I don't understand all the nickname stuff that goes on these days.
Years ago, a nickname was something that just happened amongst friends and family, not a planned out thing.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 03/09/2021 17:19

It's lovely and works as a name in its own right.

HeronLanyon · 03/09/2021 17:23

I would assume it was a nickname. Agree with some of the above comments about it just not being a great name but of course for some it is a perfect name and no doubt there are loved ones called just that amongst us !

romdowa · 03/09/2021 17:26

There's a girl in my estate called lexi , it's her full name and I don't think anyone has ever presumed it was a nickname. I quite like it

Bit tacky as a standalone name.

JovialNickname · 03/09/2021 17:37

It does sound a bit stripper-ish, sorry

ThreeFlowers · 03/09/2021 17:39

I liken the name Lexi to Hayden, Brodie, etc - personally I wouldn’t go for a name like that, just not my thing

JovialNickname · 03/09/2021 17:40

She'll be called Sexy Lexi constantly, with no option to change to a full name. Might not be what you want for a child!

Givemethatknife · 03/09/2021 22:50

Only as a nn, please…

DramaAlpaca · 03/09/2021 23:15

It's better as a diminutive but it's not great. It's a bit, um, downmarket. Sorry.

PlainJane1000 · 04/09/2021 08:08

Steven Gerrard has a daughter called Lexie. I guess she is a teenager now. There is also a child Lexi on Eastenders, which I assume is her full name so I don't think it would be completely unexpected as a standalone name but I think a longer name gives the child options as they get older.

Chachachawoo · 04/09/2021 19:53

I find lexi grim. It sounds sleazy to me. Wouldn't use it in any form

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 04/09/2021 20:12

I really dislike Lexi, it’s very popular, no idea why as it feels quite tacky. Usually hyphenated with May and screamed across the playground.

Tulips15 · 04/09/2021 20:28

I know a few called "Lexi" all under age 10.
No nickname, just Lexi.

I'm not keen on it

This. It's really not great I'm afraid OP.
WaitinginVain · 04/09/2021 22:07

I'm not keen personally but it's perfectly acceptable as a name in its own right and if I met one it wouldn't occur to me that it was short for anything. I would actually prefer Lexi to any of the names it could be a nickname for.
