I know a little Paisley who has a sister Ruby. They are lovely little girls. Great name.

Mayhemmumma · 01/09/2021 20:24

I think of the fabric, to me it seems like a wet drippy name - I only know of one.

Classica · 01/09/2021 20:25

@BastardMonkfish

I just hear big Ian bellowing 'say no to sodomy' Blush
Now I'm wondering if it would be worse for someone to think you'd named your child after the awful Paisley Sr or the awful and thick as mince Paisley Jr!
HeronLanyon · 01/09/2021 20:30

When I (not Irish) do a Paisley (snr) impression - maybe 3 times in my life - I nearly blow a gasket (blood pressure) and choke as I spit and growl/shout out with venom whatever nonsense. Then recover and apologise but it can be contagious. Can’t be done for long at all.
Have urge to go to Paisley - doesn’t look too grim from quick google. A huge number of very famous people are FROM Paisley I see in wiki.

GintyMcGinty · 01/09/2021 20:33

If you'd ever visited Paisley you wouldn't consider it as a girls names for one second.

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 01/09/2021 20:35

I have always loved the idea of calling a daughter Paisley. My mum is from Glasgow and I have lovely memories of shopping in Paisley with my Gran. I haven't been there for several decades so can't speak of what it's like now! I am also a textiles specialist so the link to the pattern means something to me. I think it's a pretty sounding name. Looks like I'm in the minority though!

AaalrightyThen · 01/09/2021 20:43

Depends where you live. In the USA, with no associations to the town itself and just thinking about the pattern, Paisley Park, last names as first names etc, yes, fine. On the outskirts of Glasgow where Paisley is a well known fairly down on its luck these days town? Nah.

cactijones · 01/09/2021 20:57

I really like it

RAP08 · 01/09/2021 20:59

@HoldingTheDoor
Hahahaaha!

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/09/2021 21:01

Ian Paisley springs to mind. Maybe not the best association, either of them.

Also, Parsley (the lion, but I’m quite old Grin

Maisie?

GreenBiro · 01/09/2021 21:01

When there are so many other lovely names to choose from!

KittenKong · 01/09/2021 21:01

As a Glaswegian - hell no! Maybe go for Castlemilk or Gorbals?

Lidlfix · 01/09/2021 21:03

The withdrawal method is sometimes referred to as "getting of At Paisley " as it's a stop before Glasgow. So if the Rev isn't enough to put you off that might.

Unfashionable · 01/09/2021 21:09

Interesting town, Paisley. Today, the place is a total dump with almost nothing to recommend it, but as you walk around what remains of the town centre & look up, you can clearly see the faded grandeur of so many of the old buildings. It’s obvious that the town was once a proud, thriving, affluent place. A very long time ago.

As a name for a little girl, it’s a no from me.

TatianaBis · 01/09/2021 21:46

It works ok in the US as it’s not associated with a town.

HeronLanyon · 01/09/2021 21:52

Or a political family - an extremely divisive family. In Norn Iron.

PricklesTheHedgehog · 01/09/2021 21:59

It's different. I would say no. How about Ashley, Penny (Penelope), Holly or Poppy?

MooseBreath · 01/09/2021 23:13

I'm not keen on the name.

That said, people who name their children the likes of Paisley, Brooklyn, Paris, India, Chelsea, etc. aren't necessarily naming them after the place! I never understood why so many people think that they are.

Enough4me · 01/09/2021 23:15

Really don't like it as a name.

Scarby9 · 01/09/2021 23:17

I know two American sisters - Paisley and Presley.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/09/2021 23:25

Nice sound but chavvy vibe.

Indiana2021 · 01/09/2021 23:35

Poor Paisley is getting a hard time here. The town not the name! It should be a fabulous place with it's beautiful buildings, river, old mill buildings and Abbey but has been going downhill for years, has a lot of social problems and suffered very badly from the death of the High Street. The High Street is awful! It's such a huge, populated place too that the issues are probably amplified.

Anyway back to the name - If you ever visit Paisley OP you're more likely to meet a wee Mirren or Mirin than a wee Paisley Wink

mathanxiety · 02/09/2021 00:22

Paisley - No way.

I know a few Presleys though.

Classica · 02/09/2021 00:30

Nice little house for sale in Paisley for £1m-ish (I'd need to change that glossy white kitchen though). Built for one of Paisley textile industry's big movers and shakers.

Paisley has some very affluent areas. Steeped in history. Much of the same misery and crime as it’s even worse neighbour Glasgow.

But it’s famous for David Tennant ( maybe he’d claim Ralston but that’s deffo still Paisley 😉), Paulo Nautini and the world famous Paisley pattern, so it has it’s positives. I also know an Australian with family in Paisley, and they named their dd Paisley.
