Please help, my partner and I have finally managed to shorten our list to just three names, we are due our little girl in 5 weeks! Which name do you prefer, Evelyn, Freya or Nina?

Evelyn. Yes it's popular but it's classic, elegant and timeless. The nicest of the three by far.

Freya. Nice enough, I'm just not that keen on it.

Nina. No, to me it's a bit nothingy, not a strong name. A bit whiny, even. Sorry.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/09/2021 01:36

I'd pick Nina - imo a short/simple, pretty, semi - classic which is still relatively underused (although slowly on the rise).

Evelyn and Freya are lovely but quite popular/trendy at the moment - so might date more (plus with Evelyn you have pronunciation issues).

Have you considered Eve? More timeless/less subject to the whims of fashion than Evelyn and without the pronunciation problems.

QueenHofScotland · 01/09/2021 01:39

Evelyn is lovely. I also feel that it is more of a classic name than the others. It will age well too.

manhattenrain · 01/09/2021 05:21

I love Evelyn and Nina! Not a fan of Freya.

WildCherryBlossom · 01/09/2021 05:41

I love Evelyn for it's elegance and slightly vintage feel. You need to decide on your preferred pronunciation.

Nina is gorgeous. I love its pared down simplicity. Pretty without being frilly. Timeless.

Not a fan of a Freya. Just do not like the sound of it at all, but I know it's terribly popular so accept I'm in a minority.

Theoldwoman · 01/09/2021 05:46

Those names are all pretty equal to me, but Nina would be slightly in front.

PurplePizzaCake · 01/09/2021 05:51

Great name choices
Fave is Freya, closely followed by Nina. Are you going to have a middle name? If so which name flows better?

RubySlippers123 · 01/09/2021 05:55

Nina.

Sarcobaleno · 01/09/2021 05:56

All are beautiful. Only thing that would put me off Evelyn is that if she shortens it she would be one of many Eves/Evas

onelittlefrog · 01/09/2021 06:05

The only one I like is Nina, it's a bit more unusual.

LiveSimply · 01/09/2021 06:33

Lovely names! We are in the same position as you, expecting a girl due in October & really struggled with names but finally have it down to 4!!!

I love all your names, but if I had to choose one, it would be Nina! I adore this name!

Hamnet · 01/09/2021 06:40

All nice but I’d go for Nina. It works across so many cultures and languages, it’s timeless, Nina Simone was a fantastic singer.

EdgeOfACoin · 01/09/2021 06:47

Nina - it's pretty and not as common as the other two.

Then Evelyn, but there's about 3 different ways to pronounce that name.

Then Freya.

sjxoxo · 01/09/2021 06:49

I like Freya! Nina less so & I know numerous Evelyns. xo

SoSoSoSleepy · 01/09/2021 06:49

Love Nina. Freya is quite nice too, bit seems quite popular and slightly dated to me. Lots of Evies and Evas around, which would put me off Evelyn.

RuthW · 01/09/2021 07:15

Evelyn if you don't mind the three different ways of saying it.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 01/09/2021 07:18

Nina would be my pick.

Freya is very overused and I don’t think it’s very pretty.

Evelyn is nice but as PP pointed out, you’ll/ she’ll be correcting people’s pronunciation all her life which might get annoying.

Skyla2005 · 01/09/2021 07:20

Freya is beautiful

MrsBertBibby · 01/09/2021 07:59

Nina by a country mile! Would have been my pick for a girl.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/09/2021 08:01

Love Freya, Evelyn is ok but I'd probably shorten it. I'm not keen on Nina for no particular reason.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 01/09/2021 08:04

Nina definitely - she’s cool, assertive, going places.

Freya is a really weak-sounding name to my ears. You just sort of breathe it out. Meh.

Evelyn is nice but Eev-lyn or Evva-lyn for pronunciation?

lollipoprainbow · 01/09/2021 08:05

Freya

ofwarren · 01/09/2021 08:10

Evelyn for me. Classy and elegant sounding.
I don't dislike the other two though.

MrsGilly1 · 01/09/2021 08:48

Evelyn X

Nicola999 · 01/09/2021 09:04

Thanks all so far for your comments, they are all really helpful and it is good to hear others views and perspectives. For a number of months I thought we had decided on a name, that being Nina. I stupidly made the mistake of disclosing this to a family member, who didn’t like it and then proceeded to make siren noises, “nee-naw nee-naw”. So this basically resulted in me doubting our original settled name choice, even know I know we shouldn’t care what others think, as long as my partner and I are happy and both in agreement.

Honestly, I feel like the amount of time I’ve spent trawling through various sites trying to find the ‘perfect’ name probably equates to days.

Personally out of the three, my favourite is Nina, whilst my partner prefers Evelyn. My only concern about Evelyn is pronunciation issues as I think there are three separate ways to pronounce the name. Should we go for this, we will be pronouncing the name “ehv-eh-lyn”. But it is likely we would call her eve/evie, just that I think Evelyn sounds more elegant and professional, and she would also have the choice to go by her full name if she wanted to. I am aware it is quite popular but I am not too fussed.

Also in regard to the middle names, we wanted this to be a nod to both of our mothers. My mums name is Jennifer Lynn and partners mums name is Margaret Rose.

So, if we go for Nina it would be Nina Jennifer-Rose, and if we went for Evelyn it would be Evelyn Margot (the Lyn In Evelyn a nod to my mum and Margot is the French form of Margaret which I prefer).
