Girl names

So after feedback on my earlier post provoked some fairly mixed responses, I’m back to seek some feedback on our much safer list of girls names, on the basis that popular names are popular for a reason, while names that are outside the top 1000 are also there for a reason!

We will probably narrow it down to 2/3 names we like and see what she looks like when she arrives, but to help narrow it down, what are people’s thoughts on the names below?

Lara
Isabel
Charlotte
Emily
Abigail
Elizabeth
Alice (DP prefers Alicia)
Lucia (pron. Lu-chi-a)

I’m concerned about the pronunciation issues with the last two, as I’m worried she’ll spend her whole life correcting people!

Thoughts?

We have similar tastes, I like all your choices except Lucia. Absolutely love Lara, that is my favourite by a country mile.

periwinkle86 · 29/08/2021 11:40

To clarify, the pronunciation issue is with Alicia, not Alice!

Lara OK
IsabelBland
Charlotte bland
Emily user bland
Abigail awful
Elizabeth nice but dull
Alice (DP prefers Alicia) hate both
Lucia (pron. Lu-chi-a) nice but a bit pretentious.

Creamyvanille · 29/08/2021 11:42

Not overly keen on any but Isabel is the best

GoodnightGrandma · 29/08/2021 11:45

Not keen on any either, but Lucia is the one I’d pick.
I know a girl with this name and it’s meant to be pronounced Loo-sia for her, she for ever correcting people who call her Loo-chia.

Some really lovely names there!

Lara - really like this. It’s pretty yet somehow feels ‘solid’ at the same time and is not overly popular (in my circles at least) but still familiar to the ear! Only problem would be if you have an ‘a’ or ‘uh’ or ‘er’ sound at the end of your surname?

Isabel - it’s very, very popular but for a good reason. It’s a really beautiful name but there are so many about. She’ll be faced with inevitable spelling questions but there are a multitude of nicknames so it’s a valid option unless you’re worried about popularity.

Charlotte - nice. Again, loads of nicknames or equally pretty as the whole thing. It’s a great name.

Emily - pretty name. Getting slightly less popular I think but there are lots around of all ages. I would say it’s a very ‘safe’ option but is pretty and lovely for a baby as well as an adult.

Abigail - I’ve never really liked this name, sorry. Don’t know why. I don’t think it’s as ‘pretty’ as your other names.

Elizabeth - can’t really go wrong with this name. It suits everyone because even if she doesn’t look like an Elizabeth when she’s born she can be Libby or Lizzy or Beth or Elle or Bess or any of the hundreds of variants.

Alice - Much prefer Alice to Alicia. It’s a sweet and pretty name but feels more sensible than some of the ‘frillier’ pretty girls names.

Lucia - would Lucy be better than Lucia? I think the pronunciation could definitely be annoying. You could always name her Lucy but call her Lucia as a pet name. Nicknames don’t always need to be the shorter version!

Top three would be:
Elizabeth
Lara
Charlotte

Lara - nice (but I knew a shocker at school)
Isabel - far too popular
Charlotte - very nice, not excessively popular (what nickname would you go for?)
Emily - far too popular
Abigail - nice enough
Elizabeth - nice enough
Alice (DP prefers Alicia) - Alice: too twee and saccharine, Alicia- you will have to put it with it being being pronounced the 'wrong' way at least half of the time and will have to stop caring, but it is nice
Lucia (pron. Lu-chi-a) - not keen

Givemethatknife · 29/08/2021 12:45

Lara - nice but blurs with all the Lola/Lila/Lyra/Lena/Leah/Leilas so I wouldn’t
Isabel - lovely but very overused
Charlotte - ditto
Emily - OK, pretty popular
Abigail - nice, you have to be OK with Abi
Elizabeth - lovely, popular, but lots of variations in nns
Alice (DP prefers Alicia) - nice but v overused. I like Alicia though and think the 4 syllable Ah-LISS-ee-ah is pretty standard in the UK
Lucia (pron. Lu-chi-a) - this will be a pain for pronunciation

So I’d go with Alicia or Elizabeth. Zara, Clara, Stella, Frances, Edith, Emma, Hannah, Emmeline, Estella, Adela, Louisa, Luella, Lucienne, Lucinda might all be alternatives

Edith (shorten to Edie?) and Lucinda (could shorten to Lucia/Lucy etc) are good! How about Louise instead of Lucia?

SoSoSoSleepy · 29/08/2021 13:10

Lara - like, although there are a lot of similar names around st the mo. I like Leila / Layla and Lyra
Isabel - pretty but they're everywhere
Charlotte - dull
Emily - dull
Abigail - ugly and dull
Elizabeth - nice but a bit dull - love Eleanor
Alice (DP prefers Alicia) - nice and classic, dislike Alicia, feels very 90s
Lucia (pron. Lu-chi-a) - Lucy is lovely, Lucia is nice, but not pronounced your way

NoWhey · 29/08/2021 13:40

Lara - Croft. It's meh.
Isabel - is a bell on the door?
Charlotte - too royal.
Emily - too popular
Abigail - love. Pretty much always shortened to Abi. Also love.
Elizabeth - too royal for my liking, but that aside, I do like the look of it.
Alice (DP prefers Alicia) - Alice is classic and classy. Alicia will have pronunciation issues her whole life.
Lucia (pron. Lu-chi-a) - as above. Pronunciation issues.

I'd go for
Abigail
Alice

Abigail Alice is lovely.

LiveSimply · 29/08/2021 13:47

I love Abigail :) also, the meaning of the name is very sweet too! Beloved by father (or something similar!)

SionnachRua · 29/08/2021 13:52

Lara - lovely but blends into the Lola/Luna/Lila etc names
Isabel - very overused and boring
Charlotte - nice but bland
Emily - also nice but bland
Abigail - I like it, less generic than Elizabeth/Emily/Isabel
Elizabeth - as above. Ok but nothing special or memorable to it.
Alice (DP prefers Alicia) - I'm with DP. Can't stand Alice, feels wet.
Lucia (pron. Lu-chi-a) - really like this

I'd personally use Alicia, Lucia or Abigail.

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 29/08/2021 14:23

They are all lovely names. My favourite is Charlotte.

Chunkymenrock · 29/08/2021 14:37

Most of those very dull and boring, but Lara is very nice indeed.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/08/2021 17:03

I love your list - to me it's not boring but fairly classic/timeless. My fave is Lara (romantic and underused), followed by Isabel (a very pretty classic, albeit one with spelling issues) and Elizabeth (so timeless with a myriad of nn options). But I like Charlotte and Alice too despite them being a bit more popular at the moment.

Lucia and Alicia will have pronunciation issues (as well as not being quite as classic to me) and Abigail and Emily are fine, just not my personal taste.
