I love Penelope nn Nell

Not keen on Dido

MissMarpleTheMurderer · 24/08/2021 12:03

@PostMenPatWithACat

I'd take out clothilde, Dido and Ida. Please bear in mind op that parents do not create or control nicknames. Peers do.
Bollocks, Prince Harry and Bear Grylls are proof of that. If a parent refers to the kid as Percy people will call her Percy, nn from peers can also develop but the idea that what is on the BC is the only option for parents is not true

Op Dido and Percy are dreadful (Dildo and Penis) as is Cloth. Sorry

The rest are fine, Elizabeth being the best.

ChrissyPlummer · 24/08/2021 12:04

Persephone would be very hard to pull off unless you’re in a vv MC area. Where I live it just couldn’t be done.

I’m a Charlotte and NN ‘Charlie’/Sharles (spelt phonetically)/Chaz/Shaz/Charl. Never Lottie as my parents hate it. Some people do call me ‘Lottie-Lou’ but not frequently.

Suziebee86 · 24/08/2021 12:07

I love Penelope but would nn Nell.

Givemethatknife · 24/08/2021 14:27

Love Persephone
Clotilde is lovely two.

Would probably avoid Charlotte and Elizabeth - lovely but so many of em

Givemethatknife · 24/08/2021 14:28

TOO

Audrey - prefer Aubrey
Clementine - love! (NN Clemmie)
Charlotte (Lottie) - prefer Lottie
Persephone (love Percy as a NN) - no! Clothilde - no too clunky / ugly
Penelope (Penny- hmm) No
Dido No

Ida - ok
Elizabeth (Elsie?) ok - prefer Betty /Betsy

Namechanger0800 · 24/08/2021 14:59

Audrey - love
Clementine - is ok
Charlotte - a classic but maybe boring ?
Persephone - it's ok but many may not be able to pronounce it? Maybe abit try hard?
Penelope - love - my favourite from your list
Elizabeth - see Charlotte

The others a def no

elfran · 24/08/2021 16:38

I think you have a lovely list OP; my faves are Penelope (I'd nn Nell), Persephone and Clothilde. But it seems the latter might be tricky in the UK - for those wondering, it's CLO as in Chloe and TEELD as in Mathilde, so no cloth or clot sounds! - so maybe not that.

OliveBranch16 · 24/08/2021 17:56

I love Charlotte and Audrey! Scarlett would be another nice option.

danascully96 · 24/08/2021 21:14

Audrey - Old Hollywood glam, but the "Aud" syllable stops me from totally adoring it
Clementine - Cute! I don't like the nn Clemmie, though. It makes me think of the deep American South.
Charlotte (Lottie) - Soft and elegant, while also self-assured, it's a well-used gem for a reason. Not keen on Lottie as it only reminds me of a pudgy Victorian toddler, swaddled in overflowing laces.
Persephone (love Percy as a NN) - Percy is adventurous and YA-protagonist sounding and I like the name itself, but I would be too afraid to use it out of fear of being called pretentious.
Penelope (Penny- hmm) - Never been a fan, just too pinched-nose sounding and Penny is cute, but copper does not evoke beauty
Dido - Hard no
Ida - Ida B. Wells is a great namesake. I would classify this name as clunky-cute.
Elizabeth (Elsie?) - Elizabeth is a classic with lots of nicknames. It's a heavy name, but nicknames galore: Eliza, Betty, Bette, Lizzie, and even Elsie all help to individualize the wearer.

LittleDoritt · 24/08/2021 22:07

Ok, honest opinion -
Audrey - love it, my favourite
Clementine - dislike, makes me thinks of oranges and also "clem" which is a Northern term for starving to death
Charlotte (Lottie) - boring
Persephone (love Percy as a NN) - too try hard
Clothilde - hell no
Penelope (Penny- hmm) - quite like
Dido - dildo
Ida - very old lady vibe but I like it all the same
Elizabeth (Elsie?) - way too many of them already

timeisnotaline · 25/08/2021 09:45

Very mixed!!

Ginandplatonic · 25/08/2021 09:49

Love Clementine, like Persephone nn Percy, Penelope and Elizabeth. Audrey ok I guess, Charlotte ok but v common. Really dislike Clothilde, Ida and Dido (because of the Dildo think mentioned previously).

Largethighsbadeyes · 25/08/2021 09:55

Audrey - Coronation street old lady
Clementine - small orange
Charlotte (Lottie) - nice
Persephone (love Percy as a NN) - trying too hard
Clothilde - just no
Penelope (Penny- hmm) - not to my taste
Dido - sexual aid
Ida - nice
Elizabeth (Elsie?) - Old fashioned. Elsie is by far the nicest name on the list.

timeisnotaline · 28/08/2021 01:57

Wow this topic moves fast, I lost track of this.
Clothilde - you’re all right, probably a second name. I love it.
Audrey - I’ve never seen coronation street and don’t care if there’s an audrey on it.
Clementine - we moved out of the uk a year or so ago and there’s no satsuma connotation to worry about. She will be a dual citizen but I’m sure she can handle it.
Dh not keen on little Percy, I’m working on it Grin
Point taken re Dido, sigh!!!

Audrey - yes, really like.
Clementine - A bit frilly and these Victorian names are dated now.
Charlotte (Lottie) - no. Boring and forgettable.
Persephone (love Percy as a NN) - yes, I quite like it- not sure I’d use it, though.
Clothilde - I would assume you’re French. I’m not keen.
Penelope (Penny- hmm)- yes, but not shortened to Penny - a coin of low value. Nell is good.
Dido - hm, Dido Harding has seriously put me off this.
Ida - OK. Princess Ida poem gives it good provenance. But it’s too bland.
Elizabeth (Elsie?) - yes, but I really dislike dowdy Elsie. There are better short forms.
