Thoughts on Gaia

I posted a while back about this name as I'd never heard it before. I think it's quite beautiful and most posters tended to agree so, just asking again to get a wider selection of opinions.

What do you think of the name Gaia for a little girl? Pronounced "Guy-a".

Apparently, it's very popular in Italy (number 16 in the name charts). My dad's Italian so I have Italian heritage.

If you do like it why do you think it's not used more?

Beautiful name with a strong meaning. Go for it.

Zarene · 22/08/2021 21:14

I like the meaning of the name (but not keen on the more modern associations),

I don't think the sound is very nice, though.

mnahmnah · 22/08/2021 21:20

I only know it from the Gaia Hypothesis. Look it up and see what you think Smile

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 22/08/2021 21:28

Gorgeous name, I love it!

AlmostSummer21 · 22/08/2021 21:33

I'm sure it sounds lovely when said by Italians, but I think in English it's a bit clunky!
Sorry

Moonface123 · 22/08/2021 21:36

It's ok but l prefer Pia.

nutgrabber · 22/08/2021 21:39

A very lovely name but I'd be wary of how her peer group might respond to it given its similarity to Gay where the original meaning is now dated and has has been appropriated to define someone who is homosexual in the last 50 years. It could prove to be troublesome for her which would probably deter me but it's obviously your choice.

StrawberryMacaron · 22/08/2021 22:07

I love Gaia. I don't think that Emma Thompson's daughter is hugely relevant (I didn't know that was her name). A few people might pronounce it incorrectly at first, but it's a simple pronunciation so I can't imagine anyone would struggle to learn it.

Clearlyunhinged · 22/08/2021 22:11

It's totally a James Lovelock construct theory of the Earth being a conscious entity. The association is huge, she needs to grow up a hippy or it will seem very daft if she spends all her time at Bicester Village

SeoultoSeoul · 23/08/2021 00:13

Lovely.

In Greek, the name is actually prnounced 'Ya-ya', not 'Guy-a'. I like Guy-a, but not 'Ya-ya'.
peaceinourtime · 23/08/2021 16:13

Is it pronounced Guy-la,? because it does look like Gay-la at first glance or if someone was unfamiliar with the name.

whyayepetal · 23/08/2021 16:37

It’s okay, but my preference for an Italian girl’s name would be Giuliana

EdgeOfACoin · 23/08/2021 16:39

I think of James Lovelock and the Gaia theory.

I'm not sure whether that is enough to put me off or not.

OfDragonsDeep · 23/08/2021 16:41

I would think you are a Final Fantasy fan

WavesAndLeaves · 23/08/2021 16:51

I love it, largely for the Earth Goddess association tbh - my husband has Italian heritage and I'd love to use it if we have a girl, but I'm not sure it works with our surname (even though that is also italian)

DiscoLightsOnAFridayNight · 23/08/2021 16:52

Love it, I automatically think of Captain Planet Grin

Chachachawoo · 23/08/2021 18:23

I love it. Know a very beautiful little girl called Gaia so only has good associations for me.
I think it's equally lovely for a child and an adult

goldenrachita · 23/08/2021 18:26

It's not used much because G names are not trendy. I honestly think it's as simple as that. Laia or Maia would be more popular sounds at the moment.

RuthW · 23/08/2021 19:43

I don't like it
