Is my girls name choice really as bad as people are making out!?

I’m starting to get paranoid. Me and dh are due a baby girl early next year and have decided on the name Theodora. It’s a name we both love and feel suits our family.
We like that it’s the name of a character in The Haunting of Hill House. We also have a Lydia after the character in beetlejuice Grin.

However when I’ve been asked about names all but two people have pulled faces and one family member said it was a ridiculous name.
I don’t really understand what’s ridiculous about it so thought I’d ask here. Is it really that bad?

It's far from dreadful OP, it's a gorgeous name! I'd shorten to Teddie or Thea...makes a lovely change from all the overused Alices, Ellas, Olivias, Amelias etc...(absolutely no offence to anyone, I just really dislike popular names).

Did you know Robbie Williams' daughter also called Thedora nn Teddy? 🥰

RainbowMum11 · 19/08/2021 23:04

I like it
Robbie Williams' daughter is Thoedora

It's pretty. I had a great aunt called Theodora, she was known as Doris, though (she was the second child called Theodora in her family, her older sister died in infancy and Doris was born two years later). It is timeless. I was expecting something line Everleigh or Shy-Ann or some weird spelling of an unusual name Grin

WingingItSince1973 · 20/08/2021 00:20

Both are beautiful names and can be shortened to equally lovely nick names xx

Hardploc · 20/08/2021 09:18

Beautiful. Love it

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/08/2021 09:21

I really don't like it but I like Dorothy.

Balonzette · 20/08/2021 10:38

It's BEAUTIFUL!

I thought this post was going to be asking about like a layceee-maiii or something. Theodora is perfect. I love it. I can't think of a bad word to say about it.

89redballoons · 20/08/2021 13:30

It's lovely!

I know a toddler Theodora whose parents call her Theo, which I quite like as a gender neutral nickname - a bit like Alex/Alexandra. Lots of other nickname potential if she wants to go by something else when she's bigger.

DelphineMarineaux · 20/08/2021 13:33

I have a Theodora so I obviously love it. I don't like the name / nickname Thea though. Mainly because it's the Greek word for aunt / auntie.

Moodyblue12 · 20/08/2021 19:43

Lovely name! Loved haunting of hill house although disappointed with s2! Theodora was a great character, think they called her Theo which is a bit masculine so I'd go with Thea

underneaththeash · 20/08/2021 19:44

It’s fine.

SaffieSoph · 20/08/2021 19:57

Love it! Great choice

22Bug · 20/08/2021 19:57

I absolutely love the name. I would like to call my daughter Theadora as I prefer ‘Thea’ than ‘Theo’ start as it’s more feminine

Ellmau · 21/08/2021 19:14

It's very nice.

inpixiehollow · 21/08/2021 20:32

I've only met one theadora she was a toddler and very sweet, i think its a lovely name and you could do either dora or thea as a nn

Elspethelf · 22/08/2021 00:13

I love it! Don't seek family approval for your name choice

whattodo2019 · 22/08/2021 00:19

i love it!! We know a few Theodoras.

MrsPsmalls · 22/08/2021 00:19

A favourite Aunty of mine, so I love it.

saraclara · 22/08/2021 00:21

I love it. And apparently it (or at least Thea) is racing up the name charts at the moment.

CallyWW · 22/08/2021 00:31

It's a pretty name! Just make sure that you will be ok with her being called Teddy or Dora or Thea..

Losttheequipment · 22/08/2021 00:34

I like it a lot

Perfectly normal and acceptable name.

peaceinourtime · 23/08/2021 17:15

I think its nice. Much like Leonora those types of names are popular.

TillyTopper · 23/08/2021 17:18

Ooh! I love that OP, genuinely really love it!
