Sibling for India and Rafferty

Looking for inspiration for a name which goes well with India and Rafferty? Don’t know what we are having. Quite like Bodhi for a boy but nothing really shouting out to us in the way of girls names. Georgia maybe possibly?!

OP posts:

@3babessoon

Yeah I realised that, not ideal. Literally don’t like any girls names,
Georgia is beautiful Freya also would go nicely Fraser is my fave boys name

Not sure to whom the comment about pretentious was aimed at, but if it was me, then that isn't what I said, what I said was picking the kinds of names often thrown about on these threads can seemingly go one of two ways. Personally I would hate my child to be embarrassed by their name as they got older, but then i picked my childrens names for them, not me.

I think that's right - the names should be about the child but often it seems to be about the parents (and their wish to have a 'unique' name for their wonderful progeny).

What's wrong with having a more mainstream first name and then going all out for a middle name? That way the child gets to choose if they prefer to have a name that's more blending or a name that shouts 'look at me!'

All kids hate their name at some stage.

then i picked my childrens names for them, not me.
Doesn't everybody @celestialGalaxy

And tbf Rafferty and India are not exactly out there
They're perfectly nice names.

CelestialGalaxy · 12/08/2021 16:30

@BorderlineHappy

No I dont think some people do pick names for their children when they talk about how one name sounds with another siblings name...that child is an individual.

Some of the way out names suggested on the thread, when i say i pick a name for the child, I mean what that name can or does represent.
Can the child use it in different forms to have different identitities as they change and grow ( eg Matthew, Matt, Matty, Hew).
What is the meaning of their name?
Is there a role model with that name that you can point to their qualities as the reason you thought that name would be appropriate for them?
Bit more personal and individual.to the child rather than 'it sounds good with the siblings name'

Cbeebiesrehab · 12/08/2021 16:50

‘Is there a role model with that name that you can point to their qualities as the reason you thought that name would be appropriate for them?’
So you’re deciding what qualities you think they should aspire to? Sounds like you also are picking names based on your own ideals.

Ultimately, as parents of course we are going to pick names ‘for us’ as newborns tend to lack the ability to shout ‘I’m a Charlotte!!’ As long as you’re not calling the baby Rasputin or something it’s hardly something to get worked up about. Not one name on this thread is even eyebrow raising.

BorderlineHappy · 12/08/2021 16:51

@CelestialGalaxy you would prbably hate my kids names then.
But i do think sibling names should "go".

Like you wouldnt call one child Albert and the other one Brooklyn.

And the world would be boring if we all liked the same names.I find Matthew boring.

So teh names you picked for your kids @CelestialGalaxy did you actually like them or did you call them that because thats what was expected of you.

PearlFriday · 12/08/2021 17:11

I dont dislike the names sarah or lucy but id feel embarrassed by the lack of any tiny bit of original thought. I wouldnt feel a dick calling out sarah in a park! but it could be my mother or my sister, and lucy could be the labradoodle.

I do believe in the think about yourself calling out these names test though!

PearlFriday · 12/08/2021 17:15

I agree with you there. My children's names go! I think so anyway. I wanted them to go. I agree that some combinations would make me think that might be "blended family".

BasiliskStare · 12/08/2021 17:44

@DillonPanthersTexas Apparently in the Archers ( radio series ) Shula and Kenton were actually named by picking out scrabble tiles ( this may be an urban myth - someone will be able to say who is better informed than I )

OaxacaChihuahua · 12/08/2021 18:04

Every Primrose Hill wannabe for the last decade has called their son Bohdi. I’d go for something less played out.

I like Tabitha for a girl.

Puffalicious · 12/08/2021 18:10

They are quite common names now. Especially because they are the name of celebrity children. Jude Law's son is Rafferty and Megan Fox's son is Bodhi.

I've known the name Rafferty for decades, it's lovely, but genuinely never heard of a Bodhi. As a PP said perhaps it's not reached us yet. I'm in Scotland and Scottish names are still very popular. My 3 DS have very Scottisg names and they all have connections to family/ friends/ one is the name of a character in a favourite novel. I know what the PP means about it's better if they mean something.

Puffalicious · 12/08/2021 18:20

How can a PP say that none of the suggested names are out there? This is from just the first 2 pages- names I've NEVER heard used, half if them I didn't even know were names:

Aurelia, Nova, Artemisia, Cosima, Athena, Micah, Theodosia, Callisto, Maren, Sibella, Bede, Sorrel, Thisbe, Zinnia, Allegra, Asa, Shoshana, Sage, Phineas, Juniper, Merrin, Torin, Heloise, Hester, Astraea.

It can't just be me...

It's not just you.

I do worry the class of 2030 will consist of Zibidee, Cosmintina and Sage's. I think names are going on different ends of the spectrum from being traditional well-known names to completely "out there" names. Who knows which names will age well and whether they will still hold their "uniqueness" in years to come.

This article is quite interesting...

DaisyWaldron · 12/08/2021 18:40

I know at least four people called Hester, three each of Athena and Micah, two called Allegra and Heloise and one each of Aurelia, Bede, Sorrel, Asa, Shoshana, Sage, Phineas and Torin.

DaisyWaldron · 12/08/2021 18:44

They span a wide range of ages, too, from toddlers to retirement age.

mathanxiety · 12/08/2021 20:46

Aurelia (2), Nova, Artemisia, Cosima (1), Athena (1), Micah (3), Theodosia, Callisto (1), Maren, Sibella, Bede, Sorrel, Thisbe (1), Zinnia, Allegra, Asa (2), Shoshana (2), Sage (2), Phineas, Juniper, Merrin, Torin, Heloise, Hester (1), Astraea.

I've marked names of kids I know.

I also know several Eloises, Esthers, and a Calista.

mathanxiety · 12/08/2021 20:57

The Guardian article is really about how other people are kinda stupid and perhaps also hard of hearing. Not the parents who bestowed perfectly nice names on their children, but midwives, relatives, etc.

Germolenequeen · 12/08/2021 21:01

Errr .... no .. it's really not 🤨

DillonPanthersTexas · 12/08/2021 21:34

Hence my lowbrow 'Hogworts' joke earlier, they would not sound out of place in said wizard school. Most of those names just strike me as so achingly middle class try hard right on Hampstead set.

"Artemisia, Artemisia, be darhling and pick up some pomegranate seeds and a fair trade mango from Waitrose"

Germolenequeen · 12/08/2021 21:35

@DillonPanthersTexas

Yes - nailed it 👏

MeadowBrown · 12/08/2021 21:37

How about Lyla?

DillonPanthersTexas · 12/08/2021 21:40

How about Lyla?

One vowel away from being a tribute to the greatest opening guitar riff in history

Changechangychange · 12/08/2021 21:43

@Ruthietuthie

Bodhi is appalling. Absolute man-bun of a name. Please don't. Agree that India and Rafferty have a posh 1990s Primrose Hill Crowd feeling. What about Milo, Horatio, Orla or Evangeline?
Have to agree re: man bun name. It makes me think one or other of the parents is way too into Point Break.

For a boy:

Caspar
Conrad
Milo
Maximilian
Nico

For a girl:

Flora
Freya
Thea
Sienna
Poppy
Cassia
Cressida
Anais
Esme
Isis
