Efa isn't a welsh spelling of a different name, it's the Welsh for Eve.

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 20:54

I've not heard or seen Enna before. Menna and Wenna, I'm familiar with, but Enna seems like a nn.

wantmorenow · 10/08/2021 20:54

Mali and cadi are lovely, know a Gwenno, also an Olwen, Branwen, Bronwen and Alwen. All easy to say. 😁

Wonmoretime · 10/08/2021 21:15

@DacwMamYnDwad , I know that Efa is Welsh for Eve. That’s the point I was making!

AlohaMolly · 10/08/2021 21:57

@DacwMamYnDwad that’s interesting to know about Enna - the family are a generations old, Welsh slate quarry bloodlines, same village for decades type family so I just assumed it was a ‘proper’ Welsh name.

My favourite Welsh girl names include (in no particular order):

Carys
Cerys
Nia
Elin
Alys
Bethan
Gwen/Gwendolen
Angharad
Eleri
Mari
Anwen
Ceridwen
Rhiannon

DacwMamYnDwad · 11/08/2021 09:18

@Wonmoretime, the way you worded it, it read like you were saying Efa was a welshified english name.

@AlohaMolly, Enna is different at least. I like the name Emma, and I think I recall a welsh Ema, but that just looks wrong to me.

AlohaMolly · 11/08/2021 09:39

Google suggests Enna is actually Irish in origin, meaning light.

DacwMamYnDwad · 11/08/2021 10:02

Maybe they wanted to use Enid (Enn-id), which is lovely, but were put off by the Ee-nid anglicised pronunciation.

Nest (approx. pron Naist) and Annest are pretty.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 11/08/2021 10:25

I have no idea if this is a general trend or just a quirk of a specific area but I know a lot of 80s-born Nias so it feels in a similar category to Gemma and Kelly to me.

DacwMamYnDwad · 11/08/2021 14:32

@ZoyaTheDestroyer, lots of Nias born in the 1960s and 70s.

Most of the names on here seem very 1960s to me, because I was at school with so many of them. Nia isn't in the same league as Gemma and Kelly because Nia is from mythology.

Gemma and Kelly are nice but they are a bit tied to a certain period.

Ffion seems 1980s to me. it's still nice.

I think the welsh names vary by region depending on how welsh speaking the area is.

DotBall · 13/08/2021 10:06

Morwenna was the daughter of the Welsh King Brychan.

Everyone totally missing that Welsh, Cornish and Breton are all from the same Brythonic language roots.

Frazzled2207 · 13/08/2021 10:11

I’m welsh
Like your options but would avoid Lowri as everyone english speaking will say wrong (1st syllable to rhyme with loud rather than load which is correct)
Seren feels a bit trendy/will date

Like Nia and Ffion. Also Anwen. My favourite is Bethan but will inevitably be pronounced Beth-un rather than Beth-Ann.

Frazzled2207 · 13/08/2021 10:14

Also really like Mari and Alys

Not missing it at all, DotBall. They are from the same roots but they are different.

Non
Betsi
Megan
Fflur (flea-er)
Wynne
Siwan (Sue-Anne)

SavageBeauty73 · 13/08/2021 20:23

I absolutely love Seren.

SavageBeauty73 · 13/08/2021 20:23

My daughters middle name is Sian as my mum is Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

DacwMamYnDwad · 13/08/2021 20:24

Non (Nonn)
Betsi (Betsy)
Megan MEG-ann0
Fflur (approx Fleer, one syllable)
Siwan (SHOO-ann)

Wynne - anglicised and a boy's name not a girl's, Wyn is ok as a girl's middle name but is dated.

DacwMamYnDwad · 13/08/2021 20:25

correction:
Megan (MEG-ann)

WellTidy · 13/08/2021 20:28

Catrin would be my first choice of girls name for a child who would be living outside Wales.

isitwinetimeyet16 · 13/08/2021 20:30

We have a Bethan and an Elin (Welsh DH, me English). Easy to pronounce, easy to spell!

footprintsintheslow · 13/08/2021 20:34

@DacwMamYnDwad

Non (Nonn) Betsi (Betsy) Megan MEG-ann0 Fflur (approx Fleer, one syllable) Siwan (SHOO-ann)

Have you name changed from Mike uniform mike?
CaffiSaliMali · 13/08/2021 22:52

I really like Elin but my DH doesn't sadly. It works so well outside of Wales as well, and it's a family name Sad
