Alys
Ellen
Megan
Caitlin
Seren

Thanks everyone. To clarify we are not located in Wales and have no plans to be in the foreseeable future but DH (and I) are keen to honour that heritage for our DCs.
I have loved the name Seren for many years but seen it rise in popularity which has also made me go off it a bit although I still love how it sounds.
Not feeling much love for Lowri, I think it perhaps looks prettier than it sounds. I feel the same way about the suggested Mali.
Nia seems to be coming out on top!

To anyone in Wales are the Carys/Cerys names a bit dated now?

Olwen, Branwen, Blodwen, Bronwen, Bethan, Alys, Carys, Rhian, Rhiannon, Megan, Mali, Rhoda,, Gwyneth.

I wouldn't worry too much about the popularity of Seren if you live outside Wales. It's still virtually unheard of if you aren't Welsh.

Joevanswell · 10/08/2021 05:16

How about Gwenllian, Haf, Heulwen or Rhianydd

Joevanswell · 10/08/2021 05:17

I know a sweet little girl called Mabli

Yeah I live near Wales and there's loads round here but if you live the otherside of the UK you might find there's none!

@DragonMamma

Lots of lovely Welsh names to choose from - I’d avoid Seren as it’s extremely popular if you’re living here. I’d also avoid Lowri as you’d get people saying Low-ree or Law-red.

Some others to consider

Mali
Cari
Anwen
Eleri
Elin
Enfys (which means rainbow)
Haf (which I love!)
Gwenno
Manon
Non
Tirion - although the one I know is sick of having to explain that it’s not a boys name (thanks to GoT)

Isn't 'LOW-ree' the Welsh pronunciation?
Katefoster · 10/08/2021 07:21

I have a welsh name and live in England and it's fine. My friend Angharad has a hard time as no one can say her name. Ffion is fine for people to say and is a lovely name. A welsh name I've just come across is Mabli which means loveable which I find super sweet

Twizbe · 10/08/2021 07:48

I live in England but born in wales. I have a Cerys and love that name. It might be a bit dated in wales, but it's unusual here. I've met one Carys the same age as her and one Cerys 3 years older.

I love that it means loved one / beloved. Fits her so well.

I like the name Nerys as well. Imogen has grown on me over the years as well.

@LizzieBet14
".......I taught a boy called Ffion - his dad was Irish.."

Fionn is an Irish boy's name. Did they choose to spell it differently ?

SirVixofVixHall · 10/08/2021 09:21

Palavah
Yes it is.
Nia is easy for people to pronounce, pretty and classic.

I love Ffion but in England people might assume she is Fiona ?

Thatsnotmypolarbear · 10/08/2021 09:57

My DD1 is Nia - I love it. Sadly I couldn't get another Welsh name past DH for DD2. I loved Eira, Eirlys, Mabli and Cerys. I was quite set on Ffion for a while, but we used to live in France and know quite a few French speakers, so that put us off the name. My DD2 has a Welsh middle name - Rhiannon, which I think is beautiful and strong, plus an excellent Fleetwood Mac song! A friend of mine has a little girl called Seren - it's ok, but not a name I'd go for. Manon is lovely too.

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 10:49

Eirian - middle-aged
Eirlys - granny name
Eira - a bit too popular
Aneira - Not keen
Gwyneira - awful
Eirwen - granny name
Gwen - popular
Tesni - fine
Rhiannon - ruined by being anglicised but nice in Welsh
Alys - fine
Anwen - granny name
Morwenna - not welsh
Ariana - not Welsh
Behan - irish surname

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 10:52

Rhoda - not welsh
Ellen - not Welsh
Caitlin - not Welsh
Blodwen - No. Far too grannyish
Rhianydd - not a name

Carys and Cerys are middle-aged.

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 10:54

Seren - dislike, naff
Ffion - nice
Nia - nice but Mia is very popular
Lowri - lovely, but people will say it as Lowry.

Topsyturvy1 · 10/08/2021 11:02

Celyn is a nice girls name translates to Holly in english

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 10/08/2021 11:02

Morwenna is Cornish isn’t it?

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 11:57

Celyn sounds masculine. I don't like it as a girl's name. Holly is nice.
Morwenna is cornish. Morwen is welsh.

TatianaBis · 10/08/2021 13:25

Seren by miles.

StarryStarrySocks · 10/08/2021 13:35

I love Lleucu (hlay-kee) but it's not really a name you can use outside Wales!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/08/2021 13:49

I love Nia and Lowri.

Angharad. (Don’t know if spelling it right though)Blush
Rhiannon.
Sian
Carys
Nerys.
Teagan.
Eleri.
Bethan.
Niamh (Is thAt Welsh)

wantmorenow · 10/08/2021 14:03

Live in Wales. Cerys not a granny name, it's still popular as is Carys. Lots of Nias too.

Niamh is Irish version of Nia I believe.

Lowri is pronounced LOWri by Welsh speakers and is correct way, often Low (like ow!) by others.
Eleri is well known but a little more uncommon.
Megan very popular.
Elin and Ffion lovely popular names.
Alys, Angharad, Rhian (difficult to pronounce properly due to gh sound), Catrin, Bethan lovely too and easy to say and spell.

wantmorenow · 10/08/2021 14:05

Oops. The Rh and Gh sounds are tricky.

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 15:13

Oops. The Rh and Gh sounds are tricky.
@wantmorenow, there is no g in Angharad
