I love Nerys.

Thedayohthedayohtheday · 10/08/2021 15:26

@DacwMamYnDwad No G in Angharad??

tywysoges · 10/08/2021 15:34

I never understand why people suggest Angharad, Myfanwy or any name with LL in these threads - very little chance of anyone unfamiliar with Welsh sounds to be able to pronounce these properly.

I don’t think Carys is too old fashioned, there’s one in DD’s class (11/12 year olds). I’ve never met a younger Myfanwy though. Nia is my favourite of your list, I quite like Ffion too.
@DacwMamYnDwad No G in Angharad??
Ng is a letter in Welsh.

CaffiSaliMali · 10/08/2021 15:43

There's no g in Angharad because the the 2nd letter in Angharad is the Welsh letter Ng. Similarly there is no F in Ffion - the first letter is the Welsh letter Ff.

Nia (nee-a) - lovely
Ffion (fee-on) - lovely with possible pronunciation issues
Lowri - lovely with definite pronunciation issues
Seren - nice but also possible pronunciation issues

Avoid Lowri in England, it will be mispronounced to rhyme with Lowry by 90% of the people she meets.

Nia and Ffion are my favourites from your list. You may need to explain - Nee ah, not Nee-uh, and Fee-on, not Fee-un, or 'fuh fie un' as an English person once called my relative! They are very easy to learn though.

Seren is nice but was very popular a few years ago. I think it will be mispronounced as Serrun. Easy to say once you know how tbough, just expect to have to explain the en sound is as in hen, not 'un'.

Alys, Mari and Eira are all favourites of mine. Nia would be on my list too if it wasn't for my love of the boys name Osian - I like more Welsh girls names than boys so Osian is on the list instead of Nia. Beautiful name though.

Pumpkinstace · 10/08/2021 15:45

I have 2 Welsh girls.

Celyn and Carys.

Carys is 5 not middle aged.

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 17:09

I don't understand why Angharad and Myfanwy are suggested either. Angharad is nice but I know so many, and it doesn't sound nice anglicised.

Myfanwy is an old woman's name. There is something nice about it though but will get Miffanway

Ll names - they are nice but they don't work with non Welsh speakers.
Lleucu - it's not hley-kee

Carys was very popular in the 1960s and seems to be in the same vibe as Carol and Karen.

Eir- names. The vowel combination is tricky.

Has anyone suggested Efa?

LadyEloise1 · 10/08/2021 17:41

Carys is a beautiful name.

TatianaBis · 10/08/2021 17:51

Love Carys.

CaffiSaliMali · 10/08/2021 18:51

I really like Carys too.

I think Eira, Eiry, Eirlys etc. are suggested a lot because they look very pretty written down (I think they have a lovely ethereal look at least). They also - Eira in particular - fit in with the current trend for short vowel heavy baby names. .

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 19:35

I think Mari is the nicest I have seen on this thread.

Most of the names are ones I know at least one of, and it's hard to feel enthusiastic about a name when you know several with the name.

Heledd is very pretty and not overused.

MerryMarigold · 10/08/2021 19:47

Nia is just like Mia. Thousands of them.

I like Cerys. I do like Lowri a lot too and Gwen is super cool because of Stefani. I don't actually know any Gwens.

mafted · 10/08/2021 19:47

I love Lowri but it will be pronounced Lowry. My friend Lowri lives in England, on her hen night all her English colleagues were asking the Welsh speakers why they were getting her name wrong Hmm

WutheredOut · 10/08/2021 19:50

I love Carys rather than Cerys

How about Meredith?

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 20:02

Meredith is an anglicised form of a boy's name.

VienneseWhirligig · 10/08/2021 20:06

I like Eluned, it sounds prettier than it looks though.

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 20:10

I know a few Gwens, all young, except one in her 40s.

Mererid (welsh for Margaret) is nice, as are Marged and Mared

DacwMamYnDwad · 10/08/2021 20:11

Eluned is very nice but El- names are overused. It tends to get shortened to Lyn.

PlainJane1000 · 10/08/2021 20:17

Thanks everyone for the information and suggestions! I think Ffion and Nia are still contenders for me. And I agree Gwen also has a bit of cool factor.
I'm not keen on Angharad and Myfanwy, I think I'm put off by the way they look on paper.
Thanks for the input on Carys and Cerys. I guess I don't want the 'proper' Welsh relatives rolling their eyes at our out of date attempt to stay connected to the Welsh roots, so good to know that we can still consider these as options.

Ds is 5 and in his class at his Welsh first language school, in a rural Welsh village, there are some lovely girls names -

Greta
Enna
Mali
Heledd
Gwenno
Cadi
Efa
Saran
Swyn
Branwen

I’ve added some names of girls above and below his class too but I love them all. My favourite is Heledd, which I think is just beautiful.

AlohaMolly · 10/08/2021 20:21

Having thought about it, I’m not sure that Enna isn’t spelt Ena…

Wonmoretime · 10/08/2021 20:24

Mali, Medi, Celyn,Seren, all beautiful names. Also Cadi, Cari, Beca , Elin. There’s also a current vogue for’Welsh’ versions of names like Alys, Magi, Beti, Lili, Efa.
I personally love Gwen, and Mair. Sadly Mair always seems to be pronounced as Maya, just as Rhian gets pronounced as Ree un Personally I think pronunciation of Angharad is like clearing your throat and I Myfanwy is a very old lady name, as well as causing sniggers for looking like ‘my fanny’

footprintsintheslow · 10/08/2021 20:25

Mabli

Ozberry · 10/08/2021 20:27

I live in England and have come across quite a few girls called Cerys. I can think of four that have been in my sons classes at school do they would be teenagers now. We’re in NW (Catholic schools if it makes a difference) but they are in the same vein as Megan, Ellie or Niamh here.
I think it’s a pretty name.

I like Nia from your list too and have always loved Rhiannon.

CornishTiger · 10/08/2021 20:30

We have welsh names in use here. An easy Welsh name but still people struggle. I’m honesty totally Hmm why people can’t pronounce it or spell it. It’s not a hard name.

However I’m glad we called her it. It suits her.
