I love this name and all the meanings in different cultures, what comes to mind when you hear the name Mina?

Winona Ryder in Bram Stoker’s Dracula

JovialNickname · 09/08/2021 17:20

Minotaur in the old Sinbad films (I'm a weirdo though)

I think it's a pretty name

Anyonebut · 09/08/2021 17:22

Dracula

In Argentina Mina means girl/lass, in standard Spanish it means mine, as in coal mine.

MaMelon · 09/08/2021 17:23

What comes to mind? I think of the lady who used to live down the road from my parents who was forced into an arranged marriage in India many, many years ago even though she was in love with someone else. She was a friend of my mum’s and never settled in the UK - she was so unhappy and homesick.

As a name it’s OK.

LtDansleg · 09/08/2021 17:23

@LtDansleg

It’s extremely feminine IMO
I have no idea why I thought you meant it for a boy 🤦🏼‍♀️
MattyGroves · 09/08/2021 17:24

It's ok but I much prefer Meera

spurs4ever · 09/08/2021 17:24

@FelicityPike

I would assume Indian too. Navid’s wife from Still Game.
Me too Grin
M0rT · 09/08/2021 17:26

I know two Mena's pronounced Mee-nah, both have the full name Philomena.
Nice women and positive associations for me.
I do know about the Dracula connection but I think that film is so bad I do my best not to allow it space in my brain!!

clarepetal · 09/08/2021 17:33

Dracula. But I quite like it. Do it!

NoSquirrels · 09/08/2021 17:36

It’s pronounced Mee-nah.

I think it’s lovely. My first association is Spanish (cos the person I know called Mina is from Spain.) My second is Dracula - but I’m very cool with that as literary heritage.

I also really love Nina too. Beautiful!

DespairingHomeowner · 09/08/2021 17:54

Nice name, even though it’s a v classic name, feels fresh

I’d definitely assume Indian heritage : although I do know one English girl with that name (her parents had lived in india)

Violetlavenders · 09/08/2021 18:36

Is it pronounced “meaner”?

No, there's no R.

It's Mee-nah

L1ttleSeahorse · 09/08/2021 19:36

Mee nah and meaner are said the same in my southern accent?

FriedasCarLoad · 09/08/2021 19:42

I don't like it.

Partly because it sounds like "meaner" in my accent and partly because it's reminiscent of the dwarf in the ring cycle.

CoalCraft · 09/08/2021 19:44

Agree with PP's "Meaner" comments.

Also, this is just from browsing Mumsnet, but apparently "Mini" is a common slang for female genitalia and it's quite close (I haven't come across that slang IRL though so not sure how common it really is)

CatMuffin · 09/08/2021 19:47

I like it

adrianmolesmole · 09/08/2021 19:48

I love it, it's cute!

TatianaBis · 09/08/2021 19:50

I know an Italian Mina and an Iranian Mina (both are Meena)

DramaAlpaca · 09/08/2021 19:50

It's a very unattractive name to me.

Philandbill · 09/08/2021 19:50

I know an adult Mina (Meee-na) whose full name is Wilhemina. She is bright, energetic, fun loving and fiesty.

FuckingHateRats · 09/08/2021 19:52

I also thought of Still Game.

Infinitely prefer Nina.

Elouera · 09/08/2021 19:58

I guess there are worse names, but it reminds of mirena (the coil) or or mina- a brand of menstrual cup!!! Hmm

Comedycook · 09/08/2021 20:01

Beautiful.

I'd imagine it's an Indian name...or Eastern European?

OffCycling · 09/08/2021 20:01

I hadn't heard of the name before. I thought of the mirena coil and perhaps it didn't work.

Greytminds · 09/08/2021 20:02

I love it. I have a cousin called Meena and I also love the Finnish name Minna.
