Edward vs Edwin vs Edmund

Hi

We love the nicknames Ed, Eddie and Teddy but would want to have a fuller name on the birth certificate.

We like Edward, Edwin and Edmund and wondered thoughts on these? As much as we like Edward we know so many boys in our area with this name and so thought maybe Edwin or Edmund might be more unusual! Please rank these names in order!

Any other suggestions much appreciated!

I like Edgar too.

All of them are nice but Edward is the safe option. Edmund makes be think of Narnia. Edwin makes me think of Buzz Aldrin.

I like Ed and Eddie.

Teddy is too popular for me to like it. Ned is awful, sorry.

I love Edwin so my order would be Edwin, Edmund, Edward but I also like Edgar.

Edward out of your list but Edison is by far and away my favourite of the Ed names.

OP - the reason you've met loads of Edward's is that it's a completely classic, timeless name (as far as I know, it's not left the top 100 boys names since records started in the 1300's!). Used by royalty as well as by Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen, Bronte etc - an Edward could be any age and it has about a dozen nicknames (so it matters less if there's another one in his class to me). If you like the name, Edward's popularity doesn't matter imo because it won't date.

I do have a soft spot for Edmund too, but it doesn't feel quite as timeless to me (and will always make some people think either of Blackadder or Narnia, where as Edward has too many namesakes to be linked to a particular character). Edwin is a bit "blah" in comparison to me, I actually prefer Gothic Edgar over Edwin. For me:

2.Edmund
3.Edwin.

Ed, Ted, Ned, Teddy are all lovely diminutives. I think I like Ned best. I know a super sweet dog called Ned 😁

How do you get Peggy from Margaret or Polly from Mary or Jack from John? Strange are the ways of the nickname-creators of the English language.

In order:
Edward, Edmund, Edwin, Edgar.

Edmond is another possible spelling but I expect people would get it wrong a lot, which would irritate me intensely.

Much prefer Ted to Teddy. Ed and Eddie are OK too.

Love Edward. Dislike Edwin and Edmund as they are wet and faintly comic.

Like Edgar though.

They are traditional dims of Edward. Like Jack for John, Harry for Henry, Jim for James.

Love Edward, but would not shorten to Teddy.

I love Edmund and Edward but Edwin has always seemed a bit drippy to me. I don’t like Edgar either, probably because my main reference point is the villain in the Aristocats
