Hi all,

Pregnant with first child and we’ve just found out we are expecting a girl!

I have always loved the name Matilda but the trouble is our surname is Matthews.

My DH thinks she will end up being called Mat-Mat or Mattie Matthews.

Do you think we would be setting her up for teasing?

I think it's fine.

Amdone123 · 31/07/2021 14:47

I like it !
I love the name Matilda.

ILoveShula · 31/07/2021 14:54

They go together well. Sounds like a Hollywood star.

MrsGilly1 · 31/07/2021 14:59

Sounds lovely together and they won't call her Mat Mat or Matty Matthews

She is likely to just be called Matilda or Tilly Matthews. Both beautiful names! X

I love it!
She might be known as a Tillie instead which is lovely!

AllTheSingleLadiess · 31/07/2021 15:25

I think it's fine. Matthew Matthews wouldn't work but I can't think of any other name that wouldn't. Having the same initial MM is also cute.

Ps your DD's nickname with be up to her. If she like Mattie she'll be Mattie regardless of what others think.

Dollywilde · 31/07/2021 15:27

Matilda Matthews is dead cool, go for it!

I’ve always loved a P first name but our surname starts with P and all I could think of is Peter Piper or Peter Pettigrew from Harry Potter. Sadly not all letters lend themselves to alliteration…. As yours does I vote you embrace it!

Dollywilde · 31/07/2021 15:29

(Also I know a few people whose nicknames have derived from their surname - I know a Mac MacAlister for example. His first name isn’t actually Mac - can’t remember for the life of me what it actually is! - but to literally the whole world he’s Mac MacAlister except passport and to his mother Grin so even Mattie Matthews isn’t an issue IMO)

Floralcupcake · 31/07/2021 15:30

I know a Matilda Matthews (whose sibling is Matthew! Hmm) she goes by Tilly.

Enko · 01/08/2021 11:26

It's fine more likely to be Tilly for nn as many have said

RubyReynolds64 · 01/08/2021 12:02

Hi all, thanks for your responses, especially the Hollywood star one! Grin I love the sound of Tilly Matthews, she sounds happy and fun, however it’s what other kids may end up calling her which worries my DH. I’ll show him your responses which may sway his opinion! Thanks again.

It’s fine I wouldn’t use it cos I don’t like alliteration but that’s not what you’re asking, the nickname thing isn’t a problem imo

Noshowwithoutpunch · 01/08/2021 12:12

I love it.
Our surname begins with M and I almost called DD Molly.

NuffSaidSam · 01/08/2021 13:49

I love Mattie Matthews!

I think your DH has misjudged school bullies a bit. Unless you're living in an Enid Blyton book I don't think the name Mattie Matthews is going to register for teasing.

35andThriving · 04/08/2021 09:51

I think it has a lovely ring to it.

Winwins · 04/08/2021 10:06

I’m not a big alliteration name fan, but I actually think it’s kind of nice :)

Holly60 · 04/08/2021 10:18

Matilda Matthews is so lovely!! She sounds like a lovely, bright, popular girl (popular in a good way!)

Also I agree she will likely be Tilly (if you want )

And also Matty Matthew’s is also fine, and she deffo won’t get Mat

Deffo go for it. Congratulation

TheLunchIsServed · 04/08/2021 10:20

I know a Thomas Thomson nn Tommy. He really suits it.

I love Mattie Mathews as well!

The Matilda I know is known as Tilda which is also lovely.

FadoFado · 04/08/2021 10:51

I like alliteration but I definitely wouldn't do a double Mat name. Sounds silly.
