Girls name help!

FrogsHiccups · 24/07/2021 15:10

DH and I can’t agree so I’m hoping wise mumsnetters may be able to help!

We currently have a 3 yr old son, Nathan. And are expecting our second baby. We don’t know if we’re having a boy or a girl yet, but need help on girl names - boys name is done.

Had Nathan been a girl, his name would’ve been Naomi, which we both really like. But I’ve said that I don’t want to use it for this baby. I feel that ‘Nathan and Naomi’ is bit of a mouthful and sounds like they’re twins or something, I also don’t like that you can’t really shorten or nn Naomi.
DH strongly disagrees and says that they’re not going to be joined at the hip for the rest of their lives and won’t always be referred to together like that.

What do you think? Would you think it’s odd to name siblings with such similar sounding names?

Other names that are currently on the table are:
Beatrix
Nina
Helena
Sylvia
But we’re not 100% on any of them.

Love Beatrice bit spelled this way! Just my preference lol
I also really like Naomi and don’t think it matters that the siblings will share an initial, I don’t think Nathan and Naomi sound too samey and I much prefer Naomi to Nina.
Helena and Sylvia are also nice names, you have lovely taste!
Other possibilities
Harriet
Joanna
Felicity
Victoria
Caroline
Suzanna
Katie
Oriana
Juliet
Isobel

From your name choices I'd choose either Beatrix or Nina but Beatrix is by far my favourite.

Amdone123 · 24/07/2021 16:59

If you both love Naomi ( and it is a beautiful name), I would have that.
Your dh is right. They're individuals. It just so happens that have the same initial. It's not like you're planning on having 10 children and all their names must begin with an N.
And if you do say Nathan and Naomi together, I think it sounds lovely.
Good luck !

Junipersky · 24/07/2021 17:33

I think Naomi is fine.
I also really like Helena.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/07/2021 17:47

Naomi is okay and I don't think it is too close to Nathan - and I always think opposite sex siblings with the same initial sounds cute (and you don't have to worry about post issues with Mr/Miss). So for that reason I'd be really tempted by Nina (which I personally prefer over Naomi) -Nina's a simple, pretty, underused semi- classic imo.

Having said that, I quite like all your choices (and actually Naomi is my least fave personally, sorry). Helena is on my own list - an elegant, Shakespearean gem with some lovely nn choices, Sylvia is a retro beauty and Beatrix has a quiet strength with cute nn's.

Others on my current list are Claudia, Antonia, Celia, Anna, Eve, Marina, Cassia and Elizabeth if it helps.

BiBabbles · 24/07/2021 18:17

Sylvia is my favourite from your list by far, though Beatrix and Helena are nice too.

I don't think Nathan and Naomi sound too similar, though there are obvious similarities -- however, having had to share my initials with my siblings and there were many annoying parts to that (feeling like the second in a set, mixed up post), which puts me off more than the similar sounding and also Nina.

Pigeonorcoot · 24/07/2021 19:48

I like all your names Smile

Naomi and Nathan is good though, so if that's your favourite you should go with it

BunnyRuddington · 24/07/2021 19:51

I'm with you on Nathan and Naomi, unless you're going for a letter theme like the Kardashians? Smile

From your list I probably like Helena the best, all are lovely though.

gillybombilly · 24/07/2021 19:53

Nathan and Beatrix sounds so lovely.

daisypond · 24/07/2021 19:59

I like Naomi a lot but wouldn’t have it alongside Nathan.

FrogsHiccups · 25/07/2021 07:54

Thanks all! Definitely really helpful. I think I can make peace with my Naomi hang ups from what you’ve said. Although I’m not going to tell DH yet - he’ll be far too smug about it! 😂

The two Naomi (adult & child) I’ve met had the nickname ‘Nomes’ so it is possible to find one if you really try lol. Lovely name and not too close to Nathan.

Chilldonaldchill · 25/07/2021 09:24

I actually know an (adult) Nathan and Naomi sibling pair. I don't think they are too similar if you really love them both but I think it sounds a very religious pairing. I would assume you were Christian or Jewish.
I think Helena is a lovely alternative.

Synchrony · 25/07/2021 12:06

I think Naomi is fine.
The one I know is nn Nae.

mygenericusername · 25/07/2021 12:10

My great grandmother was Nina shortened to from Evangeline.

Theoldwoman · 25/07/2021 14:08

I wouldn't name my kids with the same starting letter.

With Nathan, I like:

Alice
Emily
Charlotte
Ruby
Bethany
Laura
Olive
Miranda

Pingued · 25/07/2021 15:14

I think it works, just be careful opening their post and most of it is online these days.

FrancesFlute · 25/07/2021 15:29

Ooh you have lovely taste! I knew a Naomi shortened to Nim. I don't see an issue with two N names for siblings.

Other ideas:
Cassie
Lydia

Havanalily1806 · 25/07/2021 18:48

I don't think the same initial is a problem, I quite like it actually. I prefer Naomi to Nina, although Nina is one of my top names I think Naomi works better with Nathan.
Other N names which I think work well are
Nathan and Natalie/Natalia
Nathan and Nora
Nathan and Nia
Nathan and Nell
