Which of these names is poshest? And if none, what are posh girls names please?

Calliope
Beatrice

I think it depends a bit on what you mean by ‘posh’. All of the genuinely very posh people (families that have been wealthy and ‘important’ for generations) I know have got traditional, low key names. Alice, Sarah, Lucy, Catherine etc

I think Arabella is a bit of a stereotypical name for a fictional ‘posh girl’ so I would avoid that. Greek mythology names would work well if your character has got arty/creative/academic parents? But if they’re more the land owning type then I would go for something that’s been recently used by the royal family Grin

Felicity or Verity might be good options too, if you wanted something a bit different?

woodfort · 14/07/2021 15:04

I don’t think Arabella, or not anymore. Maybe a 50 year old Arabella is pretty posh but a 2 year old Arabella is just part of a big trend.

The poshest women I know are Corelia, Lucinda. Millicent, Constance, Henrietta and a Sarah.

Oh yes and a Camilla and a Celia. They are pretty old school posh families.

gamingorfaming · 15/07/2021 20:49

Not sure why Vivienne has been mentioned - it's a common old ladies name!

The poshest person I know is called John Grin

His DDs are Hannah and Georgina

ShowOfHands · 15/07/2021 20:50

The very, very posh people I know are called Lucy, Helen, Molly and Katy. Often known as Lu, Nelly, Mols and Kit. It's all about the abbreviation.

KateF · 15/07/2021 20:58

Poshest families I know have daughters called Caroline, Joanna, Sophie and Cordelia

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 15/07/2021 21:14

The only Lavinia I ever knew was definitely not posh. She was very nice though.

TiptopJ · 15/07/2021 21:19

@Happenchance

Araminta Lettuce Allegra Persephone
Even though I know how persephone is pronounced I read it as pursey-phone in my head every time before correcting myself
Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 15/07/2021 21:45

Common mistake. I once had a whole class tell me it was 'Percy phone' because that was how their teacher pronounced it.

thingymaboob · 15/07/2021 22:06
