Which do you prefer

  • Ella or Zara

Both fairly popular names, I love them both. Ella I’m worried that it’s too overly used and Zara I’m worried it’s too harsh/association with the clothing shop. Would love to hear what you think. Smile

Ella is wallpaper now, it really is.

It will sound like Angela, Karen, Joanne, Nicole and Jennifer does to us, to this generation when they’re adults.

Zara much more preferable.

Theoldwoman · 14/07/2021 04:40

I have both of those . My girls love them equally. Good choices. Never have associated Zara with the clothing store.

Some others I have/love:

Kate
Ruby
Anna
Lucy
Erin
Nina
Tess

Jane, Sian, maybe?
I like both, but wouldn't pick Ella because it's so popular. I think Zara is fun and funky. I don't think of the shop, but I suppose it depends where you shop:).

woodfort · 14/07/2021 15:58

They’re just so ubiquitous it’d make me think the parents lacked imagination and had no individuality.
Zara? It’s never been particularly popular, bottom half of the top 100s. Can’t say I’ve ever met one.

I get Ella seeming ubiquitous because Ella on its own is moderately popular but also sounds like many other popular names - like Eleanor and Ellie and Isabella etc but Zara I think doesn’t have that because it’s not particularly popular itself and also doesn’t sound like another popular name.

I vote Zara. I think it’s great.

Ellmau · 14/07/2021 18:45

Ella is nice enough but a bit bland.

Zara is classy.

CoalCraft · 15/07/2021 15:57

Anna
Anne
Jane
Jean
June
Gale
Hope
Sara (though prefer Sarah)
Tess
Bess
Hera
Nora
Lara
Tara

Think Ella and Zara are both fine.

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 15/07/2021 19:40

Zara. I don’t know any.

Ella is dull, there are loads of them and it’s just a bit wet.

LimeRedBanana · 15/07/2021 19:42

Even Elle is preferable to Ella.

careerchangeperhaps · 15/07/2021 19:47

Loads of Ellas where we live. It's a pretty name but doesn't really have any impact because it's overused IMO

I love Zara. I only know two (both are about 8 years old).

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2021 19:59

Zara is a great name. Ella is boring, a bit twee and definitely over-used.

Uramaki · 15/07/2021 19:59

Zoey

FartleBarfle · 15/07/2021 20:04

Lila definitely

AubergineParmigiana · 15/07/2021 20:11

Beth

JaninaDuszejko · 15/07/2021 20:19

Another vote for Zara (I think of Philips rather than the shop). Ella is so ubiquitous.

Anne, Skye, Gail, Juno, Elsa, Nina, Lisa, Cora, Alma, Jean, Hope, Iris, Vera, Dawn, Rose, Jess, Kate, Beth, Joan, Rita, Mena/Mina, Lucy, Ruby, Gwen, Inez, Thea.

RickOShay · 16/07/2021 17:29

What about
Rosa

Cleo

Wren

Maya

Skye

Ines

Iona

Juno

tubbycustardtummyache · 18/07/2021 22:02

Love Zara, it was on our shortlist. It has a nice meaning too (flower in Arabic, princess in Russian)
Also like Lara and Eliza

olidora63 · 18/07/2021 23:50

Esme ..pronounced Es…me not may !!

LimeRedBanana · 19/07/2021 00:10

Oh, the Es-me pronunciation is really not good. 😬

SionnachRua · 19/07/2021 00:12

@LimeRedBanana

Oh, the Es-me pronunciation is really not good. 😬
Amen to that.

Es-may - pretty.
Es-mee - Envy

spotcheck · 19/07/2021 00:17

Why does the name have to have 4 letters?

EatAllDay · 19/07/2021 00:28

Much prefer Zara. Or Sara.. rhymes with Zara .. (not pronounced Sarah).

Love Anna & Ruby as other 4 letter names

Shad0w · 19/07/2021 00:48

Jade?
