Fin or Finn

Hi all

My sons name is Finley and we would shorten it to Fin/Finn at some point I'm sure.

I am wondering which spelling to use. I am a teacher and all the Finley's or Finlay's at my school use Fin but I am seeing Finn increasingly on social media.

Thoughts please!

Please don't tell me you don't like it as it is already my sons name 🙂

I'd go with Finn

CurlsLDN · 11/07/2021 14:41

To me Finn is a boy, fin is part of a fish

RainbowStarsForever · 11/07/2021 14:42

Finn

simbobs · 11/07/2021 14:43

Finn is a name in its own right rather than an abbreviation. Fin is more commonly used for that.

Camandmitch · 11/07/2021 14:44

Fin works as a diminutive of Finley/lay but Finn better as a standalone name.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2021 14:44

I agree with @Camandmitch.

My friends son is Finley and his nickname in Ley as his little sister started calling him that as she couldn't pronounce the "F" sound

He's 17 and Ley really suits him

Two n's, otherwise it just looks unbalanced and fishy.

I LOVE it! It’s probably my favourite name but already taken in my family or it would be our baby’s name. I would go Finn, looks more like a proper name to me (teacher also) 😊

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/07/2021 19:25

Finn is popular in it's own right - so I'd stick with that spelling (even as a nn) as it will likely be the default anyway.

DotDotDotDotDot · 11/07/2021 19:29

Fin looks a bit strange to me. Definitely Finn, lovely choice of name.

Roselilly36 · 11/07/2021 19:32

A friend of mine lovely son is Fin, I said is it short for Finley, no just Fin. Really suits him.

StiggyZardust · 11/07/2021 19:33

My Finlay is Fin for every day use!

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 11/07/2021 19:44

I have a Finley and I don’t usually shorten it but when I do I use Fin. It just felt strange adding an extra N at the end to me. But maybe when he is older he will want to spell it that way I don’t mind really. At the moment he doesn’t like it shortened but he is only 4 so maybe that will change.

Thank you all!

I never have thought of Fin as in a fish's fin... but of a strange one as it's a name!
