Is there a website where you can check name popularity by year of birth?

I’m sure I remember one shared on here donkeys years ago…

You could type in the name then check how many babies were given that name each year. I think there was a graph.

Does anyone know what I mean? Confused

Yes! It was just called babynames.co.uk

I last used it 5 years ago though so no idea if it still exists or has changed

The ONS site can help you see popularity and identify if a name has peaked.

I think it's this one

This uses the ONS data over the last 100 years to show you how names have increased or decreased in popularity.

There's a current thread with a mother regretting a popular name.

She first liked the name after hearing it in a popular TV series that was on air 2000-2005.

Here's the ONS graph. It appears on the chart in
2000.

I put my daughter's name and it came up with nothing. Is it only for fairly popular names?

ILoveShula · 09/07/2021 14:31

Yes

ILoveShula · 09/07/2021 14:36

Top 100 in England and Wales only. If you put in a name that is extremely popular in your region it might not be on there.

Example might be a name like Jac or Osian - hugely popular in Wales but don't even register.

toastofthetown · 09/07/2021 14:57

The ONS graph has more years, but only covers the top hundred names. The Darkgreener website covers every name registered at least three times in England and Wales, but is only since 1996. I'm not aware of any data before 1996 (publicly available) that covers name popularity outside the top hundred.

This website is quite interesting for anyone likes names. It tells you the top 1000 baby names (in America) for each decade, from 1880 to 2000.

I like it, anyway. Smile
