Matías or Samuel

Baby boy 2 due in November and we struggle as we need names that work in (South American) Spanish and English. We already have a Sebastian (Sebbie) which sort of puts me off Samuel, might be a bit odd to have a Seb and Sam.
Love Matías but not sure if easy to pronounce and had a few raised eyebrows from English side of the family.
Can't use Matteo or Santiago but love those. Would love any other suggestions or opinions on either Matías or Samuel?

Both lovely. Lots of people will omit the accent on Matías, so if that bothers you, choose Samuel.

Matias.

I would embrace the s America- much more alive sounding names.
So my bet is Matias but also like Rafael, Nicolás and Alejandro.

Like Samuel love Matias, gorgeous name and works really well with Sebastian.

Matias, lovely

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/07/2021 19:57

I'd use Matias. As much as I love Samuel, I think having same sex siblings with the same initial can be a hassle and Seb and Sam may get confusing.

Matias is "Mah -tay -us", is that correct? I don't think most nationalities would have a problem with that, since similar Matteo ("Mah -tay -oh") is well known.

CliftonGreenYork · 08/07/2021 19:59

My middle name is Matthias (13th apostle) and very similar to Matias - which is a lovely name.

Salvador.

Matias will get written as Matthias, and in the UK will get Mat-eye-us.

My guess is that it is Mat-ee-ass

Amdone123 · 08/07/2021 20:23

Matias is lovely. People will pronounce it however you introduce him.
I've only seen it spelt Matteus. As in Mah - tay - us.
Love Sebastian. I like Samuel too, but yes, too much with Seb.

sebbiesmum · 08/07/2021 21:34

Thanks everyone. Definitely leaning towards Matías even more now. It would be pronounced Matt-ee-us but I'm not overly bothered about the accent as we have Sebastían but the accent is rarely used.
Love Nicolás but they have an uncle nick which I think is too similar. Not keen on Salvador or Rafael (it's mostly the older generation called Rafael/ Rafa) but do quite like Alejandro.
Thanks for your opinions and suggestions!

Whât about Teodore? As in Tay o dor. Lovely name 😊

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 08/07/2021 23:26

I prefer Matías but that’s because I knew a Samuel and he was a bossy pain in the arse

Amdone123 · 09/07/2021 08:15

Love @Priceyslefteyebrow's Teodor.

Chilldonaldchill · 09/07/2021 08:41

Matias is great.
If I saw it spelt like that I'd pronounce it correctly but I think lots of people might say mat - EYE - us the first time.
But they will only do that once - your pronunciation is much nicer anyway!
It's a great name.

somanyncs · 10/07/2021 00:03

Love Mathias.

Geamhradh · 10/07/2021 07:31

As Matias is a popular enough name in lots of languages all with the same pron, I don't think you need to worry about it. I know Spanish, Swiss (German) and Czech ones and they're all lovely.
The only problem you'll get is people deciding by looking at it and not realising it's a phonetic spelling, that it's pronounced like Matteus/Mateus. But shouldn't be an issue.
Don't like Samuel at all.
