What are your thoughts on Paula and Pauline?

I'm guessing most people won't feel they are ready for a comeback. I know such a cool and quirky 30 year old Paula though and it seems so refreshing

Absolutely not a fan ... MIL might have one of those names though Confused

MintMatchmaker · 05/07/2021 21:44

Thoughts are very 60s for Pauline and 70’s for Paula. Prefer Paula out of the two.

andpeggy1 · 05/07/2021 21:44

Paula is better than Pauline

RuthW · 05/07/2021 21:46

I went to school with loads of Paulas. I'm 53. It's ok but I like Paulina.

Floralnomad · 05/07/2021 21:46

I wouldn’t use it but Paula is way better than Pauline .

Saltyslug · 05/07/2021 21:47

Paulette

DinaofCloud9 · 05/07/2021 21:47

Paula is nicer than Pauline but I'm not a fan of either.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 05/07/2021 21:48

Is your surname Fowler for full effect??

MitheringSunday · 05/07/2021 21:49

I really like Paula and Paulina (I think I like the Paul-eye-na pronunciation, as in A Winter's Tale, best). Pauline, I think, is a bit in the same vein as Janice/Carol/Maureen - one of the new generation of 'granny' names that won't make granny chic.

Luckingfovely · 05/07/2021 21:49

Paula much better but still not great!

FindingMeno · 05/07/2021 21:49

Paula much better than Pauline.

anormalperson · 05/07/2021 21:49

Much prefer Pauline. I knew a very cool French one

Bumzoo · 05/07/2021 21:50

Dreadful.

Mamascoven · 05/07/2021 21:53

No

Zarene · 05/07/2021 21:53

I know a Spanish Paula pronunced Pow-la, which is marginally better.

Slub · 05/07/2021 21:53

Paula is lovely 🥰

55378OO8 · 05/07/2021 21:57

I like Paulina best, followed by Paula.

toastofthetown · 05/07/2021 21:59

Paula is better than Pauline, but I don’t think either or them are ready for revival yet. Names usually come back after about a hundred years after their initial popularity, when they are great grandparent names.

ElvenMoonwings · 05/07/2021 22:00

I like Pauline, I think it's quite pretty. It's a classic name, why not. It reminds me of Pauline in the children's novel Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield. That Pauline was platinum blonde and very pretty. Other oldie names have made a comeback, so why not Pauline?

I don't like Paula, though, sadly. Something just a bit too plain and masculine about it. The ine ending feminizes Pauline for me.

WaitinginVain · 05/07/2021 22:02

Paula is a 70's name, but quite a nice one. I don't think there were ever too many of them and it's pretty. Personally not keen on Pauline unless there's a family connection.

DramaAlpaca · 05/07/2021 22:09

No. Both sound much too dated.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 05/07/2021 22:10

I’m not keen on Pauline. It’s in the same bracket as Lorraine/Brenda/Irene/Lynne/Kathleen.

I don’t mind Paula. Although I wouldn’t choose it personally.

Iamtheweedonkey · 05/07/2021 22:10

God no, one of those is my name, I've always hated it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/07/2021 23:22

Paula feels slightly less dated than Pauline imo (only because "a/ah" endings are generally much more popular than than "ine/een" endings at the moment).

But like pp's I much prefer the sound of Paulina/Polina (since it isn't used much in the UK compared to the rest of Europe, it doesn't feel dated to me).

ladygindiva · 05/07/2021 23:24

My first MIL was a Pauline, sadly passed away. She was an amazing, lovely woman. I like it.
