Thoughts on Lyla

Since I got pregnant with ds1, I always had my heart set on Lyla. I’m now pregnant with dc3 and after 2 boys, I was shocked to be told it was a girl (much to the disappointment of ds1 and ds2) as I was convinced it was another boy. Now I’m having a wobble on the name.

What do you think when you hear the name Lyla?

Beautiful name

IeatPotNoodles · 03/07/2021 22:07

Really like it. Not very common around here, I've never met one anyway Smile congratulations Thanks

AuntieDolly · 03/07/2021 22:07

Doesn't really flow as a name for me. Lyra maybe? Delilah?

Comedycook · 03/07/2021 22:08

It's sweet

FindingMeno · 03/07/2021 22:09

Lovely

Galvia · 03/07/2021 22:11

Gorgeous name

IsThePopeCatholic · 03/07/2021 22:14

Lovely

StartingGrid · 03/07/2021 22:28

Beautiful name, though I prefer the spelling as Lila.

Sunbird24 · 03/07/2021 22:32

I like it a lot.

DramaAlpaca · 04/07/2021 01:27

It's pretty and girly, not a strong name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/07/2021 02:08

Nice enough name but I always think of that spelling as a bit trendy looking (similar to Myla). I prefer the more traditional looking Lila or Lilah personally.

Chunkymenrock · 04/07/2021 02:25

I don't like it, sorry. I think Lycra or Liar. It reminds me of golden syrup (Lyle) too.

JustATypo · 04/07/2021 02:32

@StartingGrid

Beautiful name, though I prefer the spelling as Lila.
That’s definitely a better spelling.

I’m not very keen on it as Lyla, reminds me of liar, and I thought at first it was a typo for Layla.

chipsandgin · 04/07/2021 02:36

Love it - if I’d had a girl it would have been between that and Juno. Gorgeous name.

PattyPan · 04/07/2021 03:04

It’s ok. I like it more than Lyra but not as much as Layla.
I would pronounce Lila as lee-luh rather than lie-luh so I wouldn’t spell it like that.

Hey, Lyla
The stars about to fall

It’s what I think of- think it’s a good name!
Would assume you were an Oasis fan.

Thank you everyone for your comments.

I still absolutely love the name. I mentioned to a colleague at work that we picked the name (I didn’t say what it was) before we knew that we were having a ds. She said then that that name was meant for dc1 and that it’s weird we’d use it for dc3 as it wasn’t thought up just for them. It made me have a wobble but maybe it’s the hormones.

We can’t call her Delilah as DH’s very old and very catholic Irish grandmother would have a comment 😂.

I like the spelling of Lila but what puts me off is that it can be pronounced in two ways. At least with Lyla, there’s no room for error. Lilah looks like you’re missing the De on the start or is short for Delilah. Maybe I’m overthinking it.

We now need to decide on a middle name. We’re open to all suggestions if anyone has any. On my list so far are:

  1. Lyla Emilia
  2. Lyla Belle (DH likes Belle but I think it rolls into one and sounds funny)
  3. Lyla Sienna
  4. Lyla Addison (I loved her on Greys anatomy, Dh thinks I’ve lost my mind).

If you think none of them sound right, please say so 😂

I like Lyla, one of my DC has a Lyla in their class.

Lyla Emilia doesn’t work it’s too samey. It’s because it’s another ‘a’.
Belle doesn’t seem like a proper name and just fits in with the Grace/Rose/May default middle names which all girls currently have.

Not a massive fan of Sienna as a name, it’s very popular. I think it’s the ‘a’ sound on the end same as Lyla.

I like Addison, it’s different.

bloominglovelyorange · 04/07/2021 08:09

I love Lyla great choice

Terrazzo · 04/07/2021 08:10

Sounds like it’s short for Delilah, I think people might assume that. It’s a fine name, I used to listen to a lot of music by someone called Lyla Foy and she’s the only one I have heard of. However there are millions of Lana, Lola, Lily, Lila, Lara, Luna etc at school, so it’s not like it’s a crazy out there name. Fine I think!

Sunbird24 · 04/07/2021 08:22

Agree with Faye
Would Beth be better than Belle, or does that have the same ‘run-on’ feel for you?
Your surname obviously has an impact on the rhythm and flow of the full name, and whether the initials spell anything, but a few that I think sound nice to follow Lyla are:
Seren
Jade
Meredith
Kate/Katy/Katie

Treezan82 · 04/07/2021 08:23

I teach a Lyla and she is lovely. Often think what a nice name.

Lyla Belle is so pretty
TheBullfinch · 04/07/2021 08:36

Lovely name.

How about:

Lyla Fay
Lyla Rose
Lyla Beth
Lyla Beatrix

ILoveStickers · 04/07/2021 09:33

Lyla is nice. I slightly prefer Lyra, but if it's the name you love, use it.

Lyla Sienna sounds really nice.

Your colleague is weird - the name doesn't belong to your first son! My brother is definitely called the name I would have had if I'd been a boy. That's completely normal imo!
