Nevaeh as a girl's name.. Yay or nay?

I'm currently expecting a DD and my DP likes the name Nevaeh but I think is sounds really tacky and well...made up.
It's Heaven spelt backwards... I work at a nursery and there are 2 babies with that name!
I prefer traditional solid names with meaning and substance behind them, rather than made up sounding ones.
Imagine the poor kids having to spend their lives repeating and explaining their name, having to spelt it out endlessly when people don't "get" it?

Maybe I'm just horrified that so many adults can be so vile about the name of a very far from Chavvy little girl I know. She's 10 years old. Dislike a name by all means, we all have our personal preferences, but to be so absolutely vile about a little girls name that does absolutely no harm to you or yours, is pretty damned disgusting tbh 🤷‍♀️

Ninkanink · 02/07/2021 16:09

I mean it’s better than abcd, I guess. But that’s really not saying much, is it.

MaMelon · 02/07/2021 16:10

It’s a name, names have connotations, always have done, always will do - don’t take it so personally.

Haffdonga · 02/07/2021 16:13

Why would you actually want a name that's anything spelled backwards? If you like a word then spell it forwards Confused

Plus at first reading many would pronounce it Never

Very dramatic. No one is saying anything about the children who are named that. Being realistic most of us make judgments on names and most people bear that in mind when naming their children.

If you heard of the following siblings, what would you assume about their background...(I've made them all up by the way!)

Sky, Rainbow and Star

Hugo, Rupert and Cressida

Kai, Tyler and Destiny

We'd all make judgments wouldn't we...hippy, posh, lower class? Now, we could be wrong of course but unlikely generally.

I live in quite a chavvy area (not for much longer thankfully!) and its popular here so it's a nay from me

Connotations that I had never heard of until this thread, & clearly nor has her family

Though IME those who tend to be obsessed with class & like to put people down as lower themselves for any perceived slight such as name choice. Generally have no real class themselves & are just wannabes. Dislike the name by all means, but the rest of the vitriol is just beyond tacky

Nobody knows the child in question. I knew from your reaction that you had some skin in the game... Of course her name is doing no harm to us or ours. It's still ridiculous, though, and I'd judge her parents hard.
GreyhoundG1rl · 02/07/2021 16:22

Christ, the notion that disliking names of the ilk makes you a classless wannabee is a good one 🤪

SingingInTheShithouse · 02/07/2021 16:28

@GreyhoundG1rl

There is a HUGE gap between "disliking" a name & the vitriol on here accrediting crap life chances & "chavvy" parents & more to a name

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/07/2021 16:32

It's awful. As so many others have said, what's the point of making a name out of reversing the letters in Heaven? Also, why inflict on your helpless baby a name that so many will struggle to pronounce and/or spell?

MaMelon · 02/07/2021 16:59

Well, now you know. It’s not the first time Nevaeh has been discussed along a similar vein on MN and I’m sure it will crop up again - just as James and Ella are boring/Hugo and Clarence are posh/Ruaridh and Aoibhinn won’t be pronounceable/Tyler and Aymee-Mai are common/Brian and Sharon are naff/Balonz and Elle pronounced Ellie are ridiculous/and on and on and on. They are just names and people have strong views about them - some names elicit negative responses, some positive. Don’t take it so personally.

Enko · 02/07/2021 17:05

@BanditoShipman
What fresh hell is this?? Do you mean like the colour Navy, but spelt incorrectly????

The one I know of is said more like Nay vee (the vee said similar to how you would say the end of Phoebe if that makes sense)

It would not be a name I would use myself but yes I do like it. I felt it was similar to Nevaeh hence I suggested it.

PattyPan · 02/07/2021 17:15

To be fair, it’s not just on here. I used to frequent the baby name section of yahoo answers about 10 years ago. Nevaeh used to get dragged for being tacky there too, even though it was mostly Americans without our class sensibilities.

sleepyhead · 02/07/2021 17:16

It's better than Senga.

Are there any other backwards names? That's the only 2 I can think of.

JaninaDuszejko · 02/07/2021 17:19

@YesPleaseMary

No, no, a thousand times no

Why not Esidarap or Aipotu or Anavrin or Tsud Rats Fo Selcitrap Modnar?

I'm loving Anavrin, it sounds like an excellent boys name. And is perfectly easy to pronounce as well. Anyone pregnant and want to start a trend?

It’s the Pauline of our time.

What is wrong with Pauline? It's just a feminine form of Paul, and both names have a long history.

MaMelon · 02/07/2021 17:23

@sleepyhead - there are a few websites such as this one with some absolute beauts Grin

I'll second that Confused. Nevaeh is from the same stable as Chardonnay; Pauline is a different kettle of fish entirely.

Well there you go op, it's DEFINITELY better than Lanesra.

JaninaDuszejko · 02/07/2021 17:30

It's better than Senga.

I would dispute that because we all know how to pronounce Senga which gives it an advantage. And while a pointless mangling of a good name at least there isn't the wankiness of 'it's heaveN spelt backwards'.

Tatum1234 · 02/07/2021 17:31

Absolutely dreadful name.

WimpoleHat · 02/07/2021 17:34

If you’re in the UK, OP, names come with social class baggage attached. And sadly, that particular one has a “lower class” tag.

Unfortunately (on both counts), this is true….

Buttons294749 · 02/07/2021 17:36

I would pronounce it Nivea if I saw itConfused

Lots of nice suggestions here, Niamh, Nevaya, you could just call her Heaven although it wouldn't work so well on a white person imo.

Spelling it backwards definitely seems satanic. (How about Natas?Grin)

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/07/2021 17:38

Neva? Like “never” with the r chopped off? Either way, it isn’t great.
