Too much like sofa.
I like Sophia!

MissMissTorrance · 30/06/2021 09:07

I really like it. I also think Sofia is less common than Sophia which is good but it's still too popular a name for me.
Very pretty though.

AnnaSW1 · 30/06/2021 09:07

I love the name Sophia but not Sofia. I have no connection to Bulgaria, so it would be weird to name my child after it's capital city.

DinosaurDiana · 30/06/2021 09:07

I prefer Sophia.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/06/2021 09:11

I love it. It sounds really magical. It makes me think of Princesses and unicorns ECT.Grin. and Don't any of you dare try to tell me Unicorns aren't real. Wink😂😂.
Joking aside though. Its also sophisticated and elegant for a women and cool for a teenager.

Love it - my daughter’s name! We went with f instead of ph because it’s the Italian spelling and husband is Italian

It’s our little girl’s name. I think it’s a lovely name, that is both strong and gentle at the same time. We have an Italian background so we used the ‘Sofia’ spelling, but I think the ‘Sophia’ spelling is equally as nice. It is fairly popular at the moment, but I think it’s one of those timeless names that suits both a little girl and a grown woman.

Africa2go · 30/06/2021 09:26

Very popular at the moment (Sofia/Sophia). Think Sophia was in the top 10, Sophie is in the top 20 too and I think Sofia was also in top 30 - so if you think of those as one very similar name (I know they're slightly different), likely to be the Number 1 name at the moment.

People will always ask is it fear or fire.

Palmatree · 30/06/2021 09:36

Popular, but very pretty.

3JsMa · 30/06/2021 09:40

Pretty feminine name and suits all ages.
My DD's name is Sophie but I often call her Sofia (SOH_FEE-YA)

Angel2702 · 30/06/2021 09:44

It’s very popular there are several Sophie , Sohpia, Sofia’s in each of my children’s classes.

HavelockVetinari · 30/06/2021 09:47

I know a few Sophias, aged from toddler to adult. All of them are lovely!

KirstenBlest · 30/06/2021 13:33

Sophia is the better spelling in the UK. Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and is pronounced SOFF-ya.

The name is extremely popular and has been for a while. She will be correcting the spelling a lot, and using a different spelling of a common name doesn't make it special.

Safiya is similar but a little bit different.

toastofthetown · 30/06/2021 13:45

It’s just so popular. If you combine the spelling Sofia and Sophia it’s the second most popular name, and almost number one. Adding in Sophie then the names combined are easily number one, over 1500 more than Olivia. Popular names are popular for a reason and it means they’re widely liked, but I’m not really sure what Mumsnet can really tell you.

Geamhradh · 30/06/2021 22:56

It's lovely.
In Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania etc the spelling Sofia would be the usual one, and obviously it's a common and mainstream enough spelling for it not to cause any issues in the UK (if that's where you are)
