Hi, So due boy end of August time and can't decide on a name that we are 100% on, have one syllable surname beginning with S.

Keen to have john in the middle names and have 3 names plus surname.

First child and really struggling to make the decision. Names we like are Kit (this name on BC) but not sure if this works as a first name, Arthur (Art, Artie)Otto (I'm not so keen on this one), William hmm that's about it! I'm sure there must be names we haven't discovered.

Any ideas? 😬 Thanks so much 😀

Is Kit not quite abrupt with a one syllable surname?
Wilfred
Oscar
Arlo
Charlie
Alfie
Albert / Bertie

I love Kit. We live in Scotland and it’s really unusual where I stay. I really wanted to go for it for our baby due August but my partner wasn’t as keen. I would choose it if you partner likes it and I would have gone Kit on the birth certificate too. Love Arthur too but it’s already used in our family and is probably more popular. Arnie was one I’ve just been thinking about recently, I really like it. Ari is one of my favourites ever. Also really started to love Reuben since being pregnant

toastofthetown · 29/06/2021 10:57

I agree with pp that Kit John Smith (or whatever your surname is) sounds abrupt. Arthur is my favourite you'd suggested but is so popular at moment. Otto is also nice. William is very classic, so most people won't get excited about it, but it's a solid name.

KirstenBlest · 29/06/2021 10:59

I don't think KIt will work with a short surname. Kit Smith, Kit Shaw, Kit Scott etc

I don't like Otto.
William and Arthur are fine.

Try the names with the surname (but no middle name) and see what you think. The first names you suggest are quite popular so he will probably Arthur S or Arthur Surname most of the time.

PattyPan · 29/06/2021 11:53

I agree Kit is too short with a short surname and middle name. Arthur is too over used at the moment. I absolutely love William! Even I wouldn’t use Otto because I think it’s too much and my DC will be German speakers. What about Nicholas, Toby, Theo, Oscar?

Winkywoowoo · 29/06/2021 11:58

Thanks all, I can't believe I hadn't even thought how it would sound with two short one syllable names so yes agree Kit is out.

I like Arlo
Albert / Bertie
Theo
so these are ones to consider,

Thanks

Love Kit
Would be great on BC

Breadandbutterpudding85 · 29/06/2021 12:00

Oh sorry @Winkywoowoo

Twinkie01 · 29/06/2021 12:02

DS has a 3 syllable middle name, Elliot, as he has a one syllable Christian and surname, it sort of softens the abruptness of the one syllable name.

Could you do a longer middle name or use Jonathan?

KirstenBlest · 29/06/2021 12:08

How about Kitto?

If you're down to three or so, wait now until baby is here. He doesn't need a name until you register him anyway.

Sometimes they just fit a name better. My daughter did not fit the name we'd picked for a girl when she arrived. We changed it as soon as we saw her.

TatianaBis · 29/06/2021 13:54

What is the fad with Kit? It’s awful.

KirstenBlest · 29/06/2021 15:21

I don't like it either Tat. I don't like many of the currently trendy names.

Arlo, Ezra, Theo, Roman...

I think Kit became trendy after Game of Thrones. The actor is Christopher on his bc.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/06/2021 15:39

William is lovely - very classic with some great namesakes. It's always stayed in the top 100 so is very timeless. Arthur is nice and also classic but much more subject to the whims of fashion - it's currently at an all time high so might date your DS more.

Kit is lovely too but so trendy at the moment as a given name - the older Christopher, nn Kit might serve him better longer term imo. Otto is too German comedic sterotype for me personally, sorry.

Similar to William - Edward, Alexander, James, Thomas, George, Charles (all classics that have stayed in the E & W top 100 since records began).

Similar to Arthur - Frederick, Henry, John, Robert, Albert, Peter, Phillip, Alfred, Wilfred, Stanley, Sidney.

Similar to Kit - Bertie (Robert/Albert), Pip (Phillip), Jem (James/Jeremy), Hal (Henry), Cal (Charles/Calvin), Ned (Edward or other Ed- name/Benedict).

Similar to Otto - Ivo, Jago, Hugo, Nico (Nicholas/Dominic).

Winkywoowoo · 29/06/2021 16:08

Thanks everyone some great suggestions, I have two cats whose names have been mentioned above so that limits things 😬

I know what people mean about Kit, i'm not even sure why we like it. Just something a bit different I guess.

I will keep thinking!
