I know many will not like either .

I love both, but Hugo for the slight win.

BasiliskStare · 29/06/2021 04:21

@Luckingfovely thank you for that - so this is not naming a baby ( so maybe I should not have posted - but I was talking to my son about names I thought of - he is early twenties ) - those were two - I also liked Hamish.

His view was - it's just my name Grin And how much time do people take choosing names

Hugh

Much more timeless!

Arrierttyclock · 29/06/2021 14:59

I prefer Hugh. There are Hugo's everywhere now

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/06/2021 15:01

Hugh - lovely and much more classic. I don't dislike Hugo but in 10/15 years its gone from being sometimes used by a certain set (hence the old posh boy stereotype - see the Vicar of Dibley etc), to very trendy/popular currently so risks dating imo.

BasiliskStare · 29/06/2021 15:13

I prefer Hugh - we went for something different . I liked Hamish but DH vetoed - so went differently - well maybe we ended up OK . I had also thought Piers - I think now ( no offence intended to any Piers ) am glad did not go with that ( I was thinking of Piers the Plowman - did English - not Morgan Grin )
Also Guy . I love Guy as a name . & Francis .
Just a musing about some names we had thought of but did not use. It does not matter a jot now.

Actually I wish I had used John. But - DS has his name now and it is just him.

@BasiliskStare I like your names!

Hugh and Guy were top of my boys’ list, also love Hamish (family name), and John.

But, turns out we’re having another girl. And I have no ideas. What would you call her, as we seem to have similar taste? Grin

Hugh

I feel like Hugo is becoming a bit try hard with people who want to be perceived as posh!

Ninkanink · 29/06/2021 19:44

Hugh is alright (especially given the circumstances! Smile ) but I do much prefer Hugo. However as others have said it’s very popular now and probably going to become dated and ‘done’ very soon, so you probably did the right thing!

Ifixfastjets · 29/06/2021 19:48

I like hugo.
Can be hugh as a nn.
Hugo just seems a bit more friendly.
And reminds me of ds friend from primary school.

I said this on another thread today. I know a 22 yo Hugh. It suits him. He’s a bit overweight though so gets called Humongous by unkind pals

BasiliskStare · 29/06/2021 20:58

@Pogostemon ha ha - I suspect you would not like my names for girls ( I have not had a daughter ) but in my mind was Stella and Celia . I liked Margaret nn Margot) I liked Annabel or indeed Nancy ( family name ) Evelyn ( family name ) or in the sense that which Victoria Coren Mitchell called her daughter Barbara - I quite like Jeannie.

Ha ha told you I was was rubbish at girls names
