Hi,
We aren’t sure if we are having a boy or girl yet, we have a boys name but really struggling with a girls name.
I want baby girls middle name to be Mary after my nan, what do we think of Sylvie as a first name?
It’s my fiancé’s Nan’s name and I know it would mean a lot to him but is it a bit too old fashioned? My younger sister has a very old fashioned name as she was born just as my grandad died and it was after him and I know she’s hated it her whole life and I don’t want to do that to a baby haha.

So what do we reckon to Sylvie?

Sounds more like a nickname. Maybe sylvia and use sylvie as a nickname ?

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/06/2021 19:55

I think it's very twee.

FuckingHateRats · 24/06/2021 19:55

I love it.

ufucoffee · 24/06/2021 19:56

I think it's lovely. Such a pretty name.

Sauvignonblanket · 24/06/2021 19:56

Love it!

drpet49 · 24/06/2021 19:57

I like it

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/06/2021 19:57

There's one in my DS's class, and we know two others about the same age (6). It seems to be current in East London.

Jfw82 · 24/06/2021 19:58

I love it - was one of final two names we were down to for DD but as I loved both my DH had final choice and chose the other one

maryberryslayers · 24/06/2021 19:58

It's gorgeous. I know an adult one, she's lovely and it suits her. It's not a nickname at all.

JSL52 · 24/06/2021 19:59

Beautiful name.

UrgentExit · 24/06/2021 19:59

Absolutely love it, but would choose Marie as the middle name.

Hippohappiness · 24/06/2021 20:01

I like it, although I prefer Sylvia - I know a lovely 2 year old Sylvia. Sylvie could be a nn?

mooloop · 24/06/2021 20:06

Absolutely love it! I'm expecting a baby boy but Sylvie was my first choice if he was a girl Smile

BeeyatchPlease · 24/06/2021 20:07

I absolutely love it. It was my chosen name for a girl but we had a boy. I first heard it I France and knew if I ever had a daughter, I'd want to name her Sylvie. Strangely, I don't like Sylvia as a name, reminds me of my Gran's pain in the arse neighbour. Grin

Joolsin · 24/06/2021 20:07

Very beautiful name

thisplaceisweird · 24/06/2021 20:08

I love it!

Soubriquet · 24/06/2021 20:09

I like it but it doesn’t really go with Mary

Sylvia Mary goes but Sylvie Mary just sounds a bit off.

I really like the name Sylvie though

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/06/2021 20:09

Sylvie is the French form - it is a full name, same as Sylvia or Sylwia.

LagganBubble · 24/06/2021 20:12

It's lovely, very french!

SmallestInTheClass · 24/06/2021 20:20

It's pretty but think it sounds strange followed by Mary. Sylvia goes with it much better. I'd either change one or the other. Sylvie Maria or Sylvie Marie might be better if you'd be happy with a variation of Mary?

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 24/06/2021 20:47

Sylvie is really lovely, as a PP has said too, I find Sylvia really dated and awful though. Strange really.

pilates · 24/06/2021 20:50

Very nice

seepingweeping · 24/06/2021 20:57

Love it!

Bipbopbee · 24/06/2021 20:58

Beautiful

Is your Fiancé's Nan French? It would be unusual to meet an older Sylvie in the UK, unless it was short for Sylvia which was very popular 70/80 years ago - Sylvie is not at all dated in the UK (but from what I hear it is known as a Mum/Gran name in France)

Sylvie has a lovely sound though, very pretty imo. Just bare in mind it is increasing in popularity as people look for the "new" Evie/Sophie, so you may occasionally run into others (but Sylvie is still nowhere near top 100 yet).
