Tristan?

I'm probably changing my name to Tristan so I want opinions on the name (plus nickname ideas because my birth name was Jasmine so I basically only went by Jazz or JJ)

I'm from England and have never met a Tristan if that helps any (I'm not posh!)

I love the name Tristan. People on here say it's posh but I think of the legend of Tristan and Isolde. Plus for some reason I also think of a surfer in Summer Bay! There must've been a character called that!

PrivateParty · 21/06/2021 20:15

I find it kinda hard to say for some reason..

Icantthinkofanythingrightnow · 21/06/2021 21:00

Love it. A great name

Ellmau · 21/06/2021 21:02

Are you wanting a male name specifically?

converseandjeans · 21/06/2021 21:10

It sounds quite posh tbh & not sure it's a name I would choose.

AntiWorkBrigade · 21/06/2021 21:17

I’ve always loved this name, but it does always remind me of ‘the Tristrams’ that AA Gill was always writing about in his TV columns.

I imagine I’m in a fairly small minority in having the name put me in mind of the works of AA Gill, however, so I think you’re ok.

blairresignationjam · 21/06/2021 21:19

I also find it awkward to say. Did you consider Tristian? which is sort of pronounced TRIS-chin.

HollyBen · 21/06/2021 21:22

There is a child who lives near me and goes to one of DDs called Tristan. I really don't like the name. I am not really sure why but every time I hear it I think urgh!

Twinmammaplusone · 21/06/2021 21:25

I know one. I don’t love the name. It seems to be increasingly recommended on baby names threads.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 21/06/2021 21:26

I like it - one of the vets in all creatures great and small.

generalkenobi · 21/06/2021 21:28

Yep

It always makes me think of sadness. Triste = sad in French.

HowdenMinster · 21/06/2021 22:11

I love it. I knew a lovely Tristan a long time ago and the name will always have good connotations for me.

Ellmau · 21/06/2021 22:28

It's a nice name. I think Tris is the only reasonable nickname.

Ellmau · 22/06/2021 00:19

Do you want a complete break or would something you can use Jas as a nickname for be an option?

generalkenobi · 22/06/2021 07:14

Don't mind whatever. I've been debating Jasper recently to keep it simple for my family

OP posts:
Ellmau · 22/06/2021 07:54

That was exactly what I was going to suggest!

Roselilly36 · 22/06/2021 07:55

I love the name Tristan, one of my favourite names, only ever known one.

Chilldonaldchill · 22/06/2021 09:29

I don't like it at all. The only one I've met has been the very opposite of posh and really annoying.
But go for what you love!

SumAndSubstance · 22/06/2021 14:17

I much prefer Jasper to Tristan (I also have the problem of triste being sad in French), but it’s your name- you choose what feels right and don’t choose something for other people!

Ogwen · 22/06/2021 16:01

I went to school with a Tristan, who was lovely. Not posh. Always known as Tris (soft s).

Damnpeskykids · 22/06/2021 17:53

I love it! From 2 of my favourite films - Legends of the Fall and Stardust!

Kimblebee19 · 22/06/2021 18:26

I like it, but if it were my decision I think I'd pick a J name and retain the nickname JJ.

AmIPeriOrAreYouJustAnnoying · 22/06/2021 18:28

Jasper is nicer.

MegaCityOne · 22/06/2021 20:28

Love it. Good choice
