Elara

Recently heard the name Elara and have to say I'm pretty taken by it!
What are your thoughts on the name?
My only reservation is my son had a top 10 name; would it be weird to have siblings one with an usual name and one with a top 10 name?

Thanks in advance. X

Lara is much nicer. The E weakens it and makes it yet another El- name.

cocoloco987 · 20/06/2021 15:43

Elara is fine. Not common but not out there in anyway to clash with a more common name. Elanna is nice too. Will probably be shortened to Ella

BiBabbles · 20/06/2021 15:54

It's nice, though I first read it as Eliara I think because I'm more aware of Liara as a name. Elanna as a pp mentioned is also nice.

I wouldn't think anything of names of different popularities - those change. My DS1 was top 40 when he was born, it's now maybe top 150. I also have a child whose name is, as she called it after we looked it up - a 'Top 3000 name'. It takes more than different popularities for them to clash, at least enough for me to notice.

I agree with a pp, I would choose Lara, else she'll just become another Ellie, they're everywhere.

Kanaloa · 20/06/2021 16:37

It’s ok but I prefer Lara. Lara feels really strong and unusual whereas Elara is a bit less strong.

Gullible2021 · 20/06/2021 16:39

My friend's daughter's name. It's one of Jupiter's moons. I think it's beautiful.

ILoveStickers · 20/06/2021 16:40

I actually disagree with some people above - Lara is a bit wet to me, but Elara sounds much more strong and distinguished.

amylou8 · 20/06/2021 17:17

It's nice, I like all the 'ara' names. Personally prefer Lara.

Pawprints2017 · 20/06/2021 17:33

It's beautiful. Not weird at all!

PoppyFern · 20/06/2021 17:36

To me personally it sounds pretentious, clumsy and made up. Even though I know it's not.

Sorry

Meredusoleil · 20/06/2021 17:39

I think it's lovely and very original. Much nicer than the more average Lara!

Maireas · 20/06/2021 17:41

It's a really pretty name, and not common. I don't know why siblings have to have matchy names.

KM38 · 20/06/2021 17:45

@lighteninginabottlejmf don’t know any Elaras but I know an Alara which is a Turkish name 😊 its lovely!

thecognoscenti · 20/06/2021 18:09

I know two fairly young ones. I think it's becoming much more popular. I want to like it but like a PP it just feels like a lot of the other weak and frilly Ellie/Evie/Ella/Eva names that are ten a penny.

ivykaty44 · 20/06/2021 20:31

similar to the Welsh name Elerie

TatianaBis · 20/06/2021 20:35

It’s ok it’s a bit meh.

Prefer Estella and Elyssa.

TatianaBis · 20/06/2021 20:39

There’s also an Italian name Ilaria which I also prefer - equivalent to English Hilary.

ILoveShula · 20/06/2021 20:44

@ivykaty44

similar to the Welsh name Elerie
Only Eleri isn't spelt Elerie.

Eleri is pronounced El-erry. Both Es are short.

Amdone123 · 20/06/2021 20:52

I'm surprised I quite like it ! Don't like Lara, dated to me.
Love pps suggestion of Ilaria. That's lovely.

Gullible2021 · 20/06/2021 20:57

My friends don't pronounce it eh-LARA by the way. They say EL-ah-ruh, a bit like a rhyme with Eleanor.

Another friend has a Lara who was born 6 months before Elara. I thought it was a sweet but increasingly popular name, the Laura of today. Whereas Elara to me was more
bohemian and whimsical, maybe because they explained about the link to the moon. I don't really link the names together.
They have a very different feel to me.

tinyradish · 20/06/2021 20:57

Ooooh i love it! Never heard of it before...beautiful.

lighteninginabottlejmf · 20/06/2021 21:15

I quite like it but prefer with an I - Elaria

LadyCatStark · 20/06/2021 21:21

I like it. It is one of the less well known Game of Thrones names though of that makes any difference to you? I know Game of Thrones names are generally not considered a good idea (despite most of them being awesome names!).

LadyCatStark · 20/06/2021 21:22

Actually, just checked and it Ellaria so you’re clear on that front 😂.
