Hi all! Me again. Still not expecting but back with another ‘this vs that’ baby name question haha

Claudia vs Clara?

My mind tells me that one is a little more ‘posh’ but I won’t tell you which as I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I like them both. Assuming Clara is pronounced klah-ra rather than clare-a. I've never heard the clare-a pronunciation in real life but have read here that it's the more common pronunciation in some regions.

SilverOtter · 17/06/2021 20:48

I prefer Claudia. Clara is very popular at the moment.

Ubradgh · 17/06/2021 20:50

I’ve known a Clara from birth. She’s now twenty and her name has suited her all her life. Claudia is also lovely but I think it’s a more grown ups name. No help at all I know but that’s my thoughts Smile

bippityboppityboo22 · 17/06/2021 20:52

Thanks everyone! Any thoughts on whether one is posher than the other? I have my own thoughts but would love to hear yours first!

I'd say Claudia is 'posher' on paper but I'm sure there have been lots of lovely common Claudias too.

Misbeehived · 17/06/2021 20:59

Claudia is a nice name, however I’d say Clara definitely esp as the diminutive for Clarissa. I’d say it’s posher too although that’s not why I prefer it.

Classica · 17/06/2021 21:02

I do think the pursuit of a posh name is a bit pointless if you're not posh yourself. They'll never let you into the club no matter how many of their customs you assume, unless you have the right pedigree and went to the right school, and are chinless, and all that other nonsense.

Misbeehived · 17/06/2021 21:06

@classica totally agree

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/06/2021 21:08

I suppose if you associate posh with less commonplace then Claudia is posher, since it's much less well used /popular than Clara which has had a popularity surge in the last 10 years.

Although both names are Latin, Claudia is also more obviously classical to me (Ancient Roman) which I suppose some people consider more upper/middle class since Latin tends to be taught more in private schools .

I don't find either Claudia or Clara especially posh, they aren't unusual enough - I'd save that for names like Tarquin, Persephone etc (although I like those anyway Grin).

Actually, I have one of these two names in mind with the feeling that it’s considered ‘posh’ and therefore I **wouldn’t use it. But thanks for assuming the opposite. Wasn’t the opinion I asked for :)

No need to get so testy.

N4ish · 17/06/2021 21:19

I love the name Clara! Not so keen on Claudia. No idea which is posher . . .

LowryLake · 17/06/2021 21:20

Claudia. More unusual. Sounds classier. Clara is quite trendy at the moment and I think it will date badly. It's one of those vintagey, slightly fussy names which are currently very popular - not a fan personally. See also: Evie, Elsie, Eliza, Margot etc.

WithASpider · 17/06/2021 21:48

My Goddaughter is Claudia and is 21. She's been Claud, Claudi, and a personal nickname but has suited it every step of her life so far. Family is not 'posh' either.

It's a beautiful name.

ProcrastinationStation3 · 17/06/2021 22:08

Clara is posher imo. But not because it's posh per se, more that Claudia is the opposite end of the spectrum to posh.

Also I wouldn't go with Claudia personally just because it makes me think of claudication.

Longdistance · 17/06/2021 22:09

Clara Grin

iduno · 17/06/2021 23:24

Clara by miles!

BreasticlesNotTesticles · 17/06/2021 23:40

I have a Claudia. Beautiful name!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 17/06/2021 23:42

Clara. it's nice

Claudia is weather forecast

GloriousGoosebumps · 18/06/2021 05:07

Another vote for Clara, which has a simple elegance to it.

groovergirl · 18/06/2021 05:47

Both are lovely names. If you wanted to push the boat out, maybe consider Clarissa, Clarinda, Claudine and Claudette.

Violetlavenders · 18/06/2021 06:30

Names are not 'posh'.

People might be considered educated, but not names. People make names, not the other way round.

Personally I dislike the meaning of Claudia. And Clara is overused imo.

Violetlavenders · 18/06/2021 06:30

Clarissa is lovely.

ILoveShula · 18/06/2021 08:34

Of the two, Claudia. I prefer Claudine.

AdaHooper · 18/06/2021 08:45

My niece is a Clara but my SIL is Spanish speaking. I think it is a very pretty name.
It is one of the names in Isabelle Allende's book 'House of the spirits'.
The women are called Clara, Alba and Blanca, which all refer to light.
So my vote would clearly be Clara.
