Too similar?

Say mum was called Jennifer and she wanted to name her daughter Penelope. Do you find these names too similar? Not so much in their full name forms but when it comes to nicknames - Jenny and Penny etc. Thoughts? Is it cute or a bit cringe?

Jenny and Penny or Jen and Pen are too similar imo.

Moonshine11 · 15/06/2021 14:18

Since it would just be nn then I don’t think it’s an issue

Justmuddlingalong · 15/06/2021 14:18

If you're known as Jennifer and not Jenny, I think it's fine. If you go by Jenny I'd think twice, in case Penelope becomes a Penny.

loves2plan · 15/06/2021 14:19

I think it's cute

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/06/2021 14:33

Cute for twins I'd say, but cringe for mother and daughter. Couldn't Penelope be Nell rather than Penny.

Nahhh · 15/06/2021 14:35

Oh this is outing but I am Jenny (Jennifer) and my daughter is Penny (Penelope) it’s fine 🤣 it didn’t occur to me until about a month after registering her but no one’s ever commented.

lakesummer · 15/06/2021 14:35

I think it is fine.
Mum will lose her name for decades anyway most likely and just be called mum.

Also boys are often just given the exact same name as their dad's and no o e blinks an eye.

lettie9 · 15/06/2021 14:38

It's fine! I didn't even understand what you meant until you spelt out the link between the diminutives.

Icantthinkofanythingrightnow · 15/06/2021 14:51

Absolutely fine

Bimblybomeyelash · 15/06/2021 14:53

My nn rhymes with a family members nn and I can’t say that I really even noticed until I was an adult!

Thanks all!

My mom is Jennifer (Jen), my brother is Benjamin (Ben), mom's sister is Brenda (Bren), her husband is Dennis (Den) and my dad's brother is Kenneth (Ken)

I have Penelope on my list but I'd only use Nellie or Poppy as a nickname because we have way too many of those rhyming names.

Bren, Den, Jen and Ben constantly respond to the other persons name when we do family events because they all sound so similar so I wouldn't do Jenny and Penny

I bet. They're so similar Grin

ILoveShula · 15/06/2021 17:31

They're fine. I know a mother and daughter with similar names and it's not been an issue.

Might be if the next baby is Ben etc. Smile

highlighteryellow · 15/06/2021 20:25

Absolutely fine, I doubt I'd even notice.

I only realised a few months ago that my eldest daughter's name is quite similar to my first name and my youngest daughter's name is quite similar to my middle name! I mentioned it to my mum and sister who agreed but said they'd never noticed.
