Leah, Lara or Elara

I gave birth to our daughter on Friday but we can't decide on her name. We both like Leah, Lara and Elara which are all fairly similar just can't make a final decision as to which one so wondered what peopled thoughts were on them?

Lara
But I'd be tempted to use Leia

Spied · 14/06/2021 10:06

Leah would be my pick.
I do like Lara but prefer the similar Clara. Also love Layla.

SionnachRua · 14/06/2021 10:08

Adore Elara, such a beautiful name. Though I wouldn't like it to turn into another generic Ellie, so on that basis I'd say no.

Leah is ok, Lara nicer imo.

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 14/06/2021 10:47

I've got a cousin Lara, but I've never really liked the name. I've a cousin Leah and a friend Lėa. I love both spellings. The other name is a big no from me.

Leah or Lara

ironclad · 14/06/2021 10:55

Lara is very sweet

lolacola77 · 14/06/2021 11:15

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall Yes I am aware of the Greek character but I still don't think it's a proper name. Or would you call a child Zeus? You clearly don't know enough to have spelt that one correctly 😂

KirstenBlest · 14/06/2021 11:28

Not Elara, Lara is much nicer.

LoopTheLoops · 14/06/2021 12:15

Leah needs a H otherwise it would be “lee” like dairylea 😬 Leah is my favourite reaaaally don’t like elara sounds like alarm

LowryLake · 14/06/2021 12:55

Lara. Elara is nice, but a bit fussy for my taste and may end up with Ellie as a nn. Leah feels a bit downmarket to me, like Leanne. I really like Leila (Layla) and Lyra.

  1. Leah
  2. Lara
  3. Elara

I’d choose Lara definitely, short but strong name. Not keen on Elara. Leah feels a bit 90’s to me but nice enough.

Leah

Miller2021 · 14/06/2021 14:08

If it helps, my name is Leah and I've always loved it. Slightly unusual, feminine, not too weird. And the worst nickname you get is Princess Leah, which is quite nice.

applespearslemons · 14/06/2021 15:28

Lovely Lara. I also like Laura too which is under-used

TenThousandSpoons · 14/06/2021 15:44

Another vote for Lara.

Lara is beautiful

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/06/2021 01:23

Of the three, I think Lara is your easiest option - elegant, internationally well used, classical (from Greek mythology), popular but not overused (hovers in and out of the uk top 100) and simple to pronounce and spell.

Leah may get misspronounced/misspelt sometimes as Lee/Leia/Lia and also doesn't look/sound quite as elegant as Lara imo (personal taste).

Elara is lovely but being quite rare, again may suffer from regular misspronunciation/misspelling (as well as possibly blending more into all the Ella's about at the moment?). It does have a nice sound though so if 3 syllables would work better with your surname...

Theoldwoman · 15/06/2021 05:41

If you pronounce Lara like Zara then I would choose that.

I prefer Laura though.

Lara! Lovely.

Leah, love it

"Leah may get misspronounced/misspelt sometimes as Lee/Leia/Lia"

In my experience, this doesn't really happen aside from the occasional "Leia" pronunciation but nothing to get annoyed about! I think people nowadays are quite comfortable asking how you pronounce a name. My gran once wrote it as "Leigha" in a birthday card, but she was very, very old...
