My neighbours dog is called Elvia 🀣🀣🀣

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/06/2021 14:44

I’m pretty sure I learnt about him in school music lessons in the 2000s so yes kids do know about him)

My kid just got congratulated by her teacher recently for knowing a song he played in music was Elvis. Still being taught in 2020.

Youaretoocool · 11/06/2021 15:00

@June2021 oh behave yourself πŸ˜‚ you’re acting as if I’m going to name him after a mass murderer like someone said above, or a villain. He’s not going to be called Hitler. He will share the name of one of the most legendary musicians in history. My child will not grow up hating themselves or me for it. If anyone dares try make him feel shit about it, I think it’ll say more about the person than my son. He won’t be raised to be a dickhead, but yes sadly might encounter some along the way

So change your name to that by deed poll.

So why give him a name that you suspect might make him a target for dickheads who might "make him feel shit about it"?
The fact that you're acknowledging that this might be a possibility really should tell you all you need to know.
Sadly, your need to appear cool appears to be winning the day.

That’s a really good point Diane thank you so much for bringing that up, thank you

Diane?

Why not change your name to it rather than inflict a name on a kid that you know he'll get bullied for?

AnxiousAnnie86 · 11/06/2021 15:13

@Youaretoocool I've had soooo many of these exact same comments πŸ™„

I'm not actually sure what the issue is! People name babies after famous people allll of the time, so why not after such an iconic one?

My good friend is a teacher and she has so many unusual names in her class! Your son will be growing up a world of different names. Name him whatever you want! X

Youaretoocool · 11/06/2021 15:14

@GreyhoundG1rl my name is unisex, I copped a lot of flack in school purely because it was different for a girl. Think like β€œAlex” or β€œTaylor”. Should i have had people saying anything to me about it? No it’s so minor but that’s life, sadly you come across these people. I’m glad my parents didn’t call me Alice or Mary, it seems that’s the only kind of name not to cop any flack

Are you the type to raise these kinds of bullies then πŸ‘€

Strokethefurrywall · 11/06/2021 15:23

Plenty of Filipino Elvis’s, all in their 60’s (my mum grew up with them).

My dog is Elvis but it’s excellent for a kid these days! Go for it!

Strokethefurrywall · 11/06/2021 15:30

Oh FfS, kids don’t bully because of a name, don’t be daft. Adults do because of their preconceived ideas of class/superiority.

What might a child say about a child named Elvis? I mean seriously? Not much I reckon.

Children will taunt for ANYTHING! Who knows, 7 year old Elvis might get picked on for wearing glasses, or teased because he’s got curly hair, or because he can’t run as fast. But probably not because of his name.
Not one child with an β€œunusual” name that I know of here (eclectic expat island), has ever been teased because of their name.

OP, there is nothing wrong with naming your child outside of the societal β€œnorms” of the collective Mumsnet hive mind. Your child likely won’t get teased unless he happens to meet one of these posters...

shinynewapple21 · 11/06/2021 15:30

@waltzingparrot

You'd think that's would be loads of 80 year olds called Elvis, given how people like to name their kids after celebrities or TV characters. Think of all the Kylies and Chardonnays. Maybe they didn't do it in the 60s.

Don't you mean 55-60 year olds ? Original Elvis fans of the late 50s/60s naming their children ?

osbertthesyrianhamster · 11/06/2021 15:33

Eh? It's not advisable to do drugs whilst pregnant.

Biscuit

You post 'Flame me!' in capitals then you call others bullies when they point out it's a bit of a shit thing to name a kid but if you love it so much, then change YOUR name to it.

Youaretoocool · 11/06/2021 15:37

All inputs read, thank you! I respect everyone’s ideas although I think I’m entitled to be rude back to anyone who was rude to me πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

I still love it, will probably use it, would be hard to find a name I love so much. Like someone said above somewhere, he’ll be sharing a name with an iconic musician. Did everyone go into uproar when loads of Britney’s started cropping up in the early 2000s? πŸ˜„ it’s not like I’m naming him Adolf or Donald πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ As some commenters have said, they knew/know an Elvis in their lifetime, it’s unforgettable. My child won’t be lost in a sea of Jack’s, James’ and John’s (no offence). Unique names are cropping up every day. I imagine his class will be filled with Piper’s, Kit’s, Keziah’s, Leif’s, Nova’s, Crew’s, Cree’s and Avery’s. As well as Louise’s, Katie’s, Tim’s and Dylan’s. Variety is indeed the spice of life

He’ll be raised a happy, kind boy where people will struggle to relate his name to anything negative. If anyone makes him feel bad about his name then I guess it will only speak volumes of how they themselves were raised. Like I said above, I had things occasionally said to me in school and that’s only because my name was unisex. Think β€œLeigh”. Do I literally have to call my kid Tom or Ben to avoid this nonsense? Also come to think of it what will they actually say? β€œYour name is associated to the king of rock n roll” πŸ€” sorry I just don’t see the negativity with it, but we aren’t all made to agree.

Also may I just add, I don’t even know what I’m having. Imagine I started all this for my baby to come out a girl anyway 🀣

It's a shame, isn't it, that we can't fast-forward 10-15 years to see whether our children are the type of people who would appreciate a unique name or who would prefer to blend into the woodwork. It can be difficult to live up to a unique name.

MisdemeanourOnTheFloor · 11/06/2021 15:49

Firstly, if his name does encourage bullying then great, he's been given an early heads up on the type of t**ts he should steer clear of. I was bullied for my name and it's completely mind-numbingly average so yeah...
I knew an Elvis. Didn't really think anything of it to be honest, it was just a cool name. Probably commented on it being unusual, then promptly got over it. Made him very memorable too clearly (can't really recall the names of other people I once worked with) and clearly didn't do him any harm either, as he went on to be incredibly successful

When I was little, my friends mum was Obsessed with Elvis. She had covered the back of her dinner lady clipboard in pictures of him and David Beckham, we used to joke she took the clipboard home to bed with her at night. Her house was heaving with Elvis memorabilia, massive pictures and posters of him on every wall. I wouldn't judge the kid, but I would wonder if you had a similar shrine haha.

Snapemalloy · 11/06/2021 16:41

I mean, Elvis shagged teenage girls so it's a no fro me.

But then so did Bowie whom everyone also idolised.
