Nice, okay, or awful?

I just can't decide what I think about it.

I like it, especially Gil. Had a boyfriend with this name in the 90s!

AnneLovesGilbert · 08/06/2021 14:45

I like it Grin

I like Gil. I don't like Gilbert.

elfran · 08/06/2021 15:12

Love it. Couldn't convince DH though!

Aquamarine1029 · 08/06/2021 15:13

Awful, sorry.

FierceBarrie · 08/06/2021 15:14

I had a major crush on the 80s production version of Gilbert Blythe. I like Gil. Not as keen on the full version, but it is a nice name.

MaMelon · 08/06/2021 15:16

Awful - up there with Derek, Cyril and Trevor.

Sunnidayz · 08/06/2021 15:16

There used to be a kid's TV show called Gilbert's Fridge. Gilbert was a green alien who was forever picking his nose and dripping bogies everywhere! I always think of him when I hear the name Gilbert.

PretzelParadox · 08/06/2021 15:22

Love it

chesirecat99 · 08/06/2021 15:31

I like Gil, Gilbert not so much, although I like Bertie, which gives an alternative nickname.

Gil is a name in its own right though, not just short for Gilbert.

Posieandpip · 08/06/2021 15:44

Cool! And i love Gilby

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 08/06/2021 15:48

I really like it, BUT I know an adult one and he has spent his life correcting people who add an ‘l’ to the end of his name and expect him to be a woman called Gill. Probably not a deal-breaker but something to be aware of.

DalPalak · 08/06/2021 16:49

I don't like it, despite loving Gilbert Blythe. Gil reminds me of fish and Gilbert sounds very clunky to me. I'm not a fan of "-bert" names in general though.

emmathedilemma · 08/06/2021 16:57

awful

Serpenta · 08/06/2021 16:59

I too love Gilbert Blythe but I have to say I always found his name to be slightly ridiculous.

Sorry, Gilbert. Sad

Plump82 · 08/06/2021 17:00

My cats called Gilbert! I do love it though.

Roselilly36 · 08/06/2021 17:02

I really don’t like it, way too old fashioned, I love some more traditional names, but I really can’t see Gilbert making a come back.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/06/2021 17:46

I like Gillon better than Gilbert if you want a longer name. However, if you're set on Gill, why not just use that? It's a name in its own right, after all 🙂

This! Swoon!
Allium16 · 08/06/2021 18:26

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm just not sold on it. Will add it to the "If We Really Have To" list!

I think he was my first celeb crush when I was about 8. Was gutted when he died.

Love Gil. Dislike Gilbert

How bout Gillies? Great Scottish name.

Chilldonaldchill · 08/06/2021 20:19

Gorgeous.

saraclara · 08/06/2021 20:23

Gilbert was my surname. I hated it. In some parts of the country it's slang for a long drip of green snot (which is presumably why the character in the TV programme that a pp mentioned was called Gilbert). A kid from that part of the country moved to my primary school. You can imagine the rest.
