A sister for Seren

Have found out this weekend that DC2 is another little girl. We already have Seren, DP has Welsh heritage without being truly Welsh and we are in England.
I think my shortlist is quite a random mix of Cerys (don't like Carys so much) or Elin for another easy Welsh name, or Charlotte or Lucy.
DP has his heart set on a really Welsh name that I really don't like and he got to pick DD's name so I've vetoed it but it would actually work as a middle name with either Charlotte or Lucy. We aren't too worried about middle names and won't have to worry about family names being used as there's too many women to keep them all happy 😂 Surname is two syllables and sounds fine with all four of my choices.

Any thoughts to help me narrow it down?

Delyth- so pretty ❤️

CaffiSaliMali · 07/06/2021 09:02

Elin is Elle-in (in as in the english word in) and Seren is SERR-en (en as in hen). So I don't think Seren and Elin are too similar.

Seren and Lili are nice together but you may want to avoid now the Sussexes have used it.

From your list I really like Nia.

Seren and:
Eira
Eirys
Eirlys
Enfys
Eleri
Tesni
Meleri
Mari
Mali
Teleri
Nerys
Ffion
Nansi
Lwsi
Ela
Efa

CaffiSaliMali · 07/06/2021 09:04

Got Nia from another thread Blush

Elin is my favourite from your list. I really like it but my DH doesn't sadly. It goes very nicely with Seren.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 07/06/2021 09:09

Malin or Lyra would go beautifully imo

OpenUpFleur · 07/06/2021 11:49

Just came to say Seren is gorgeous!

DacwMamYnDwad · 07/06/2021 11:59

Elin and Seren don't rhyme.

Swyn is awful sorry and someone will try to say it as Swine. The diphthong makes it difficult to say if you don't speak Welsh.
It is like Soo-in but the oo an i joiin together.

Cadi Swyn looks too much like Cadw Sŵn, quite appropriate for a baby.

PensionPuzzle · 07/06/2021 13:08

Loads of great ideas here, thanks ladies (and any gents of course!).

You were meant to be making the list shorter for me, not longer, but I'll let you all off 😂 definitely won't be able to use anything that will be difficult to pronounce out of Wales (leaving aside the correct Vs anglicised pronounciations that we already get with Seren of course, subtle differences are fine by us) but there's still plenty of new options for us to discuss.

I think the key message is that Lucy and Charlotte are off the table!

Mari and Mali are just two of my favourite welsh names.

Nia is a winner if you don't live in Wales and/or speak Welsh. I also love Siân and Eirys.
I also heard of an Esi recently. That's lovely.

shesellsseacats · 07/06/2021 13:17

@MorningNinja

Mari and Mali are just two of my favourite welsh names.
Are they pronounced more like Marry and Mally, or Marr-ee and Marly - or something else?
DacwMamYnDwad · 07/06/2021 13:29

Marry and Mally. The 'ah' sound that you get in Mali (country) and Marley doesn't exist in Welsh

Eirys is not really a name - it's Iris welshified.
Esi - not a welsh name, might be short for something

Eirlys is a welsh name but it's terribly grannyish

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 07/06/2021 14:23

Enfys - Welsh for rainbow
Llinos
Manon
Mair
Mali

SleepingStandingUp · 07/06/2021 14:30

Lwsi how is this pronounced please?

I love Cerys

SilentPanic · 07/06/2021 14:43

Sleeping Lwsi is the same as Lucy- It's not really a Welsh name, just a Welsh way of spelling an English name.

DacwMamYnDwad (Ar ben y gamfa wen!) Eirys is an old Welsh word for comely or fair, although I think most people would think it's a Welshified version of iris. I know 2 over 70 and one little one, am wondering if it will become more popular.

DacwMamYnDwad · 07/06/2021 14:47

@SleepingStandingUp, Lwsi is Lucy written phonetically. Pretty awful if you ask me.

Lleucu is the welsh version, and it is pronounced Clee-Oo-koo, Lewkoo or How the hell do I say that? or if you speak Welsh, Lleucu.

Enfys - oh god no, too naff and too much like Elvis

Llinos - lovely but will be Kleenose or Linnus

Delyth - dated

DacwMamYnDwad · 07/06/2021 15:02

You could always use Siarlot. (Charlotte, pron Sharr-lot)

I am familiar with Eiry but not Eirys. Could you give the source of the meaning, @SilentPanic, please.

ironmanreadyalmostnotquite · 07/06/2021 15:39

Can I add Lleuci. I love it. X

DacwMamYnDwad · 07/06/2021 15:56

You should not suggest dodgy spellings @ironmanreadyalmostnotquite, it's Lleucu not Lleuci - the ci ending isn't very nice

SilentPanic · 07/06/2021 16:57

Sure DacwMamYnDwad - It's listed in the dictionary (Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru) and was used in John Davies' dictionary 1632; and Y Gymraeg yn ei Disgleirdeb among other sources.

Eiry/Eiri are lovely too.

tukanada · 07/06/2021 17:09

Gwennan
Alys
Sian
Ceri
Fflur
Haf
Mair

DacwMamYnDwad · 07/06/2021 17:37

Hmm. It is in there but I'm doubtful.

Hatsoff2U · 07/06/2021 17:50

I love the name Cerys and am also considering it for my little girl. Those who live in Wales, how popular is the name amongst little kids in your area? I'm in Wales but don't know that many children. I don't want a name that's likely to be ultra common in school if possible!

KirstenBlest · 07/06/2021 18:11

I'm not sure how popular it is in Wales in general for little girls, but among the Welsh speakers it, along with Carys, is a middle aged name. Ceri is also a bit middle aged. Think Karen and Kerry.

Gwenan seems middle aged too, and is the more popular spelling. It's quite nice though.

SilverBangle · 07/06/2021 18:20

I have a Seren, Cerys and Angharad. (I wouldn’t recommend Angharad if you are living in England. None of our English relatives will attempt it 🥴).

Within our family we also have
Cadi
Mali
Nia - not my favourite name tbh
Elin
Lowri
Bethan
Haf
Rhiannon

PensionPuzzle · 07/06/2021 18:32

What about Elinor? Also leaning (T)Eleri now too but I can't shift Certs from my mind. I went to school with an Angharad and worked with a Heulwen so I've seen the challenges of having a 'tricky' name so trying to stick with ones that are, or can be without straying too far, said as they're seen.
