Maya/Maia/Mya

We really like this name for baby girl, but unsure how to spell it. Have seen Maya, Maia or Mya. Would want it to be pronounced "my-ah".
Which spelling is most well known and will cause less issue with pronunciation, we want to avoid "me-a" etc
Thanks x

Mya would be clearest if wanting it to be pronounced 'my-ah' IMO.

CookieMumsters · 01/06/2021 22:38

Mya or maya are both clear to me

Tinkhasflown · 01/06/2021 22:40

Mya

legalseagull · 01/06/2021 22:41

Maya - like Maya Angelou

ablisha · 01/06/2021 22:42

I always wonder if people want Maya pronounced as 'May-a'
I think Mya stops any confusion x

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/06/2021 22:42

I think Maya would be best - it's pronounced internationally like the South American Mayan people ("My -ans"), it's just in the UK as far as I know that it can be "May-ah". Maia could go either way imo.

Mya looks newly invented/misspelt to me, sorry. You shouldn't get "Me-ah" however you spell it though (that would be Top 10 name Mia).

miltonj · 01/06/2021 22:45

Maya works best I think. Phonetically yes it does say May-a. But it is well known enough that people will understand.

JustOneMoreStep · 01/06/2021 22:46

As a teacher, the only one which I'd read as 'My-ah' would be Mya. Maya and Maia, I'd read as 'May-ah'.

partyatthepalace · 01/06/2021 22:49

Can be said May-ah, Mee-ah or My-ah - last most common, all the 4 spellings ad pronunciations seem to be interchangeable

KirstenBlest · 01/06/2021 23:46

The names are so popular that you will need to correct people.

schoolfinder007 · 02/06/2021 00:00

Know 2 Mayas.

Both pronounce May-a

On that basis I would go for Mya

Violetlavenders · 02/06/2021 16:13

Mya

Any other spelling will get mispronounced

Violetlavenders · 02/06/2021 16:14

Would want it to be pronounced "my-ah".

Then I'd definitely spell it like that, Mya.

daisypond · 02/06/2021 16:20

Mya looks so, so wrong to me. As if it’s pronounced as one syllable. I’d never think it said My-a as two syllables. I’d probably spell it Maya as the most universal spelling.

zingally · 02/06/2021 17:07

Speaking as a primary school teacher... This name is common as muck right now.

In literally every class there's at least 1, if not 2 or 3, of the Maya/Mia/Maia/Mya combo.

Mymymy33 · 09/11/2023 03:51

As someone who is named Mya, I can tell you right now almost everyone confuses it/ says it as Mia so if that's something you really want to avoid then don't choose that spelling.

BoleynMemories13 · 09/11/2023 06:26

Statistically the most popular spelling is Maya but, in my experience as a teacher, half of them go by May-ah anyway! Those who don't get people call them May-ah anyway. Same with Maia.

By far the most obvious one is Mya. I know a Mya and she's the only one I know who never seems to get people pronouncing her name wrong.

peaceinourtime · 09/11/2023 14:21

I’ve always seen Maya as pronounced my-a as do most people I would say, so I don’t think you’ll have problems with people pronouncing it wrong. The spelling of mya just looks wrong.

MaloneMeadow · 09/11/2023 14:35

I’ve always preferred the Maia spelling, just think it looks nicer but there is the potential for people to assume with that one that it’s ‘may-ah’. Maya is the clearest to me. Don’t like Mya and think it could also be confused for Mia

oneinamillieon · 12/11/2023 22:02

i love maia, it's more unique

KirstenBlest · 13/11/2023 07:43

@oneinamillieon , something can't be 'more unique'.
Unique means 'the only one of a kind', 'unlike anything else'.

cheleuh · 13/11/2023 11:08

Maya
