Do you have any names you hate because of an association?

I certainly do!
Cant stand the name Molly and Polly 🤮 my aunt had a cat named Molly that was horrible, it's used to wait on the stairs and scratch you ankles when you tried to pass it. And there was a girl who was mean to me at school called Pollyanna!
OH suggested Mollie when I were pregnant and I almost had a turn!
It's sad because they are quite cute names, I just hate the sound of them.

I wouldn't say I hate the names, but I have lots of names that I can't shake the negative association, to a point where I couldn't use them. Likewise, when I meet someone who is really nice, and they have a name i wouldn't have thought of, it makes me really attracted to the name and want to use it for any potential future children.

Happycat1212 · 30/05/2021 10:27

Yep it’s really weird how you can start to dislike a name due to the person. I know someone called felicity who I cannot stand so now I hate the name

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 30/05/2021 10:31

Never met a nice Fiona.

IggyAce · 30/05/2021 10:34

My negative association names are Jessica, Natalie and Nicola I was bullied at school by girls with those names.

cushioncovers · 30/05/2021 12:38

Yes loads. All serial killers. People that have been vile to me. And my exh name.

Yennefer19 · 30/05/2021 12:40

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit I literally came on here to say exactly the same thing.

C0nstance · 30/05/2021 12:42

If it's a name like Jessica or Rebecca or Vanessa, I don't like those sharp names but I don't think I could never like a person with those names!

I don't think there's any name that is so linked with its bearer that I would hate it on somebody else too.

There are some literary names that I think oh good god really? when parents give their DC names from tragic characters in plays or myths.

HoldingTheDoor · 30/05/2021 12:44

Never met a nice Fiona.

It's the opposite for me. I haven't yet met a Fiona who wasn't lovely.

bubblebath62636 · 30/05/2021 12:45

Yes, mainly bullies from school: Jasmine, Jodie, Danielle.

Imcrc · 30/05/2021 16:21

So weird I've never met a bad Jessica! I always thought it was a nice girl name haha

Yes.

lemondrophannah · 30/05/2021 17:19

No. Hate is too strong. But there are names I think are nice that I wouldn't use because of bad associations. I've met two female Jo's that were both egotistical, self absorbed, very dull and catty but I still like the name, just wouldn't use it.

Holothane · 30/05/2021 17:21

Steven my ex
Loretta my sister
Bob my dad
Norma my aunt
Ann my birth mother
Long very complicated life story.

Holothane · 30/05/2021 17:22

Norman my cousin who had cerebal pailsy and would knock the crap out of he was six years older.

ILoveShula · 30/05/2021 17:43

OK, the names themselves aren't hateful, they are ok, but the associations are unpleasant.

shallIswim · 30/05/2021 18:47

May he outing but I don't care. Anna, Rosa, Milly, Verity and Emma bullied my DD in secondary school. Others were satellites to the gang. But I doubt very much I'll have any grandchildren with those names, with either DD or her brother. All perfectly ok names (except Milly which is a bit overused IMO), but all associated with downright nastiness.

DramaAlpaca · 30/05/2021 19:40

Yes. Two female names.

Checkingout811 · 30/05/2021 19:50

Daisy.
I don’t hate the name, I just could never use after hearing Daisehhhhhh screamed along a walkway in a very busy shopping centre. They eventually caught up to little Daiseh who was toddling around bare foot in just a nappy and hoop earrings bigger than her head. She can’t of been older than 12 months.

BetterThanKleenex · 30/05/2021 19:56

Jessica and Emily- I've only met bitchy Jessicas and Emilys.

The only Rebeccas I've know have been annoying influencer wannabes- one who changed her name by deed poll to Rebbekkuh...

DeusEx · 30/05/2021 20:16

I’ve friends who are teachers and they say this is terrible when choosing names! Grin

For me it’s Imogen. Love the name, but not the memory of the primary school bully.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 30/05/2021 20:27

All the Kerrys I've ever known aren't very nice

KirstenBlest · 30/05/2021 20:44

Funny you should say that Brown.
I can think of 2 nice ones but they spell it differently, but generally I know a few mean Kerrys.

ImbarbaraB · 30/05/2021 20:45

Yes Nikki - a nasty girl from school
Sam - an abusive exh
Kimberley - someone who treated me badly when I was going through a divorce to said abusive man

KirstenBlest · 30/05/2021 20:50

I find the calling names in the park/shop puts me off. I can't hear Noah, Oscar, Elsie, Alfie, Raphael etc without recalling the way it was called out.

Another thing that puts me off is how it sounds in a regional accent. Some names don't sound good in certain accents.

BasicMadeira · 30/05/2021 20:58

Louise. I just don't like it. No particular bass memories of a Louise but a firm dislike. It's odd for me because I like "proper" names and Lousie is definitely a "proper" name.
I dislike plenty of other names for being made up/ too trendy/ too awful etc but cannot fathom while I dislike this perfectly reasonable name.
