How many syllables does the surname have (highly relevant consideration in my opinion).

I think something starting with a vowel is good. Alexander or Arthur as suggested above, not Edward (too many "d" sounds), Albert / Adam / Aaron?

Children can be relentlessly cruel over middle names. I had that from about p4 - 7 . So 4 years of it. Nowadays it might be looked as a hyphenated surnames, although it's not.

Back in those days it was the fact that " you've got a boys name" It is a well known surname as well.

This happened in plain view of a teacher who did nothing ever. And it happened many times.

For years I said I'd change it as soon as it was legal.

My mum however died just after I turned 24.

Both myself and my only sibling received our parent's mothers maiden name as a middle name.
My mum's mum also died before I turned 3. So out of respect I've never changed it.

I rarely refer to It though and use my middle initial if I have to. Not the full name.

Children plus some teachers can be cruel.
