Starting to make a list

Good morning,

We recently found out that we are expecting a girl. I like traditional names but not super popular if possible. Surname starts with M, middle name could potentially be Anna, but only if it works with the first name of course. So far we have thought of these names, in no particular order. Any opinion on any of them? Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Rosalie
Alba
Annabelle/Annabella
Juliet/Juliette
Florence
Hermione
Josephine
Orla
Madita
Isabella
Penelope
Florence
Romy

There's a lot of lovely names on your list but my personal favourite is Annabelle 🥰

Good luck and congratulations

IggyAce · 25/05/2021 07:47

Rosalie -love this but dh vetoed it
Alba - electrical goods
Annabelle/Annabella - too frilly for me.
Juliet/Juliette - Juliet I like this. Not come across one in our large primary.
Florence - popular
Hermione - Harry Potter, it’s a lovely name but will always have the potter connection.
Josephine - like nn Josie, nice name & not popular.
Orla - nice
Madita - no
Isabella - very popular
Penelope - popular
Romy - like

LikeSomeKindOfMadness · 25/05/2021 07:52

@SoapboxFox thanks for your feedback! And especially for your suggestions. Really like Louisa and Arabella! Smile

@Babydust13 I really like it too and sort of includes my grandmother's name in it automatically (Anna). Thank you!

@IggyAce thanks for your list! I've never heard of Alba electronics, so that definitely puts me off. Good to know!
And thanks for the feedback on the others. You're right, some of those are quite popular unfortunately and I'd rather have a less common name.

Wow I’ve never heard of Madita! Quite like it! Is it like MADitta or muh-DITA or more like mad-eater. Like it and like nn Maddy. Lovely list!

otterbaby · 25/05/2021 08:34

Well you have Florence twice so you must really like that one Wink Rosalie is lovely and Romy sounds quite cool as well.

JemimaJoy · 25/05/2021 09:21

Rosalie - pretty
Alba - love this!
Annabelle/Annabella - Annabelle is pretty, if a bit popular, Annabella is way too much
Juliet/Juliette - Juliet is lovely, second spelling seems unnecessary
Florence - like Flo but now the full name, and Florence is so popular now
Hermione - LOVE!
Josephine - LOVE! And such great nickname options.
Orla - no, too popular, a little dull, will blend into a sea of Ella/Eva/Lila etc
Madita - Nickname 'Mad'? No, don't like
Isabella - pretty sounding but overdone
Penelope - Pretty, lovely nicknames
Romy - Really cute but maybe a bit incomplete as a full name?

I'd choose Hermione, Penelope or Josephine fron your list! Great names.

Also suggest:

Clementine
Tabitha
Jemima
Leonora
Octavia
Odilia

LikeSomeKindOfMadness · 25/05/2021 09:26

@Terrazzo it's a German translation of a name in an Astrid Lindgren book. I'd probably say 'Ma Dee ta' ta like ta as in thank you? I wouldn't like mad eater ha so may need to reconsider? It's not a very common name but I like it and Maddy is nice, you're right!

@otterbaby the Florence thing was an accident as I tried to remember them all. I do like it but it's more common than some others. Thanks for your feedback! I do love Rosalie

Thisisjaaam · 25/05/2021 09:28

Rosalie - really not keen on this
Alba - no
Annabelle/Annabella- Annabelle is nice!
Juliet/Juliette - not keen
Florence - nice
Hermione - too Harry Potter
Josephine - love it
Orla- lovely
Madita - quite nice. Never heard it before
Isabella- lovely but too popular IMO
Penelope - love love love

Romy- it’s ok

LikeSomeKindOfMadness · 25/05/2021 09:29

@JemimaJoy
Wow thanks for your long response!

I like Josephine but my DH is a bit unsure about it as he knows a few. I do think you're right about all the nicknames though! And it sounds cute for a baby and good for an adult I think.

I love Clementine from your suggestions, so will share that with DH later. And I like the sound of Odilia, must research it a bit!

Thanks again Smile

@Thisisjaaam thank you for your honest feedback.

I think everyone agrees Hermione is too Harry Potter and to be honest I agree.

Rosalie - love, also like Rosa and Rose
Alba - ok, bit trendy for me
Annabelle/Annabella - like, but would have to be Annabel - find the other spellings a bit frilly
Juliet/Juliette - nice
Florence - very pretty, but quite popular if that bothers you
Hermione - bit horsey
Josephine - like, could have Effie as a nn
Orla - like, would assume Irish heritage
Madita - not keen - Matilda is lovely
Isabella - frilly and popular
Penelope - not keen on inevitable nn Penny
Romy - no, like Roma though, and Rowan.

Flymetothestars · 25/05/2021 10:43

Ottilie
Felicity
Delilah
Verity
Audrey

I love Florence from your list. I know it's more popular than some of your other names but I actually have never met one yet

BikeRunSki · 25/05/2021 10:45

Josephine and Juliet are some of my most favourite names. Tye fantasy girl twins I’ll never have are called this.

Ewanispurple · 25/05/2021 11:08

Josephine is beautiful!

Chilldonaldchill · 25/05/2021 11:16

Rosalie - I like this. Slightly prefer Rosalind or Rosamund
Alba - is ok. I do think of the electronics brand but also the little girl in the Time Traveller's Wife which cancels out any negative connotations
Annabelle/Annabella - is ok. I prefer Annabel spelling. It's increasingly popular
Juliet/Juliette - love Juliet.
Florence - I really like this but it is quite popular
Hermione - I love this. I suppose it depends if you can cope with constant Harry Potter references. But it's so lovely and, although I wouldn't have used it due to HP when my children were born (15+ years ago) I think I might now
Josephine - nice. But I feel like I know quite a few Josies
Orla - don't like. Too close to oral for me
Madita - don't like.
Isabella - like but so popular still
Penelope - I know a lot of baby Penelopes. It feels to me like a name I ought to like (classic, long, pretty) but I just don't
Romy - sorry I really dislike this. All the ones I've met have been awful. I'm sure that isn't universally true though!

Hermione, Juliet or Florence for me.
How about: Miranda, Miriam, Beatrice, Constance, Freya, Tabitha?

TatianaBis · 25/05/2021 12:48

Only one I really like is Rosalie. Very pretty.

Romilly (nn Romy?)

lebigface · 25/05/2021 13:53

Rosalie, Alba and Romy are my favourites as they all very pretty feminine names which are a little unusual.
Orla is lovely but easily autocorrects to oral
Hermione sounds pretentious
Josephine sounds a bit frumpy
Penelope sounds a tad trashy
Annabelle/Annabella and Juliet/Juliette - are sweet sounding

Florence and Isabella - both nice names but ever so popular
Madita - not heard it before but like it

LarkDescending · 25/05/2021 23:35

How about Rosanna?

sarah13xx · 26/05/2021 10:11

Love Orla and Rosalie. Rosalie has so many nice options for nicknames

partyatthepalace · 26/05/2021 20:46

Rosalie
Bit little girly - think Rosanna/Rosanagh, Rosen, Rosaria or Rosemary are all better
Alba
I really don’t like this one, just ugly to me
Annabelle/Annabella
Prefer less fussy Annabel spelling, like Annabella, also Annabeth and Arabella
Juliet/Juliette
With the one t, yes
Florence
Ok, bit little girly and a lot of them
Hermione
Ok
Josephine
Ok
Orla
Ok
Madita
No - just sounds made up and makes me think of mad people
Isabella
Beautiful but way overused
Penelope
I like it but it will get shortened and Penny is awful, you could use Nell?

Romy
Meh. Sounds made up

other thoughts - Marianne, Genevieve, Stella, Cassia, Cordelia, Claudia, Leonora, Seraphina, Serena, Selene (Sell-ee-nee), Ysella (Ee-zella), Meredith, Cecily, Frances, Lois, Adela

Theoldwoman · 27/05/2021 10:18

I love Juliet from your list!

Others I like are:

Kate Anna M
Elisabeth Anna M
Charlotte Anna M
Grace Anna M
Ruby Anna M
Isobel Anna M
